HIK Controls/Custom Rig...is it either or?

I have my rig mapped to the custom rig UI anchors.  The example mocap drives my rig perfectly.  But now, I want to play with pulling on parts of my rig.  From the online videos, this is done in the "Controls" UI and not in the "Custom Rig" UI.  In the "Controls" UI, there are the "IK blend T", "IK blend R" and "IK pull" options.  My impression from all the videos I've seen is that either you use HIK controls to access those options, or you just don't get that functionality in a "Custom Rig" scenario.  Is that right?

This is my first time trying to use this workflow so please let me know if I've done something wrong.  In the custom mapping, I've mapped my IK foot controls for the legs.  But for the arms, I've mapped FK controls.  No IK for the arms.  I have IK for the arms in my rig.  But I wasn't sure how to map both IK and FK in the Custom Rig UI.

Anyway, I'd like to be able to use those IK options with a custom rig.  How do I do that?

Hello, can you please post the HIK tutorials you were look at?   I am also intersted learning how to better animate with HIK.

I have been trying to use the HIK, which comes with IK/Fk built in.  For the most part, HIK works well with MOCAP.  You can use animation layers to edit the MOCAP.

But for Pose to Pose animation, HIK does fail at times.  The IK in the feet will flip and legs will lockup.

Look at  perseus rigging 3.0 if you are looking for a rig that can handle Pose to Pose, Mocap, and can be used as an Auto Rigger to rig up any new character you will have in the future.  There are other auto rigging tools out there too, if you do a Google search for auto riging tools for Maya.

I'm looking into perseus rigging as a solution to HIK.  I have been asking questions about HIK all over this forum.  And there are more HIK questions that have yet to be answered.

Hi Sean,

Here's one I looked at this old Autodesk video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YV51sFi5aV4

Notice how once they want to make adjustments to the animation, they load a different control setup.  And there's no explanation as to what happened to the custom setup.  Is it still used?  Do I have to create an HIK Control setup and save that out before creating a custom rig setup?  No explanation as to how that's supposed to work.  Other videos do the exact same thing.  They switch from one to the other.  Never explaining why or how they work together.  Sorry I can't be of much help.

I've never heard of Perseus.  I'll google it.  Thanks

Problem with Perseus Rig is you cannot have two characters in the same scene.  That is why I've been going back and forth  with HIK.

With HIK, you can have 2 characters.
