Small cavity / space mill in hsmxpress

Hi, I have progressed a bit, and I would like to mill this part I am making,

It has an "Island" that I need to leave, but even thou there is space for a mill ( the opening is 3,12mm at the narrowest, mill is 2mm)  I cant get it to mill behind it.  

Any advice? Mill alu part.JPG

You are using Adaptive milling. Standard setting is no more that 40% load. The entry point if this "pocket" will lead to almost 100% load, so it won't machine. Also stock to leave adds to de diameter of the mill.

 

Use 2D pocket and rest machining to clear out the rest.

Stock to Leave and Minimum Cutting Radius are limiting you in this application.

 

Try reducing them both to zero and see if the toolpath with generate behind the island.

 

If it does, slowly increase the values until just before the point that it no longer generates.

 

For Adaptive Clearing you usually want to try to maintain the default Minimum Cutting Radius, but sometimes in instances like this you can get away with reducing it.

Another option you could try is set the minimum ramp diameter smaller and see if it will ramp down behind the slot.

Hi, 

Its getting better ! 

Thanks for all suggestions! 

I reduces minimum cutting diameter to 0.1mm, and removed stock to keep. 

Optimal load is at 0,8mm.

So then I just need to feed the machine som metal and see.

 

Any suggestions for the center hole that has a partial opening in it? 

using "Bore" looks a bit heavy, it spirals down to the bottom, but seems to leave a center portion since it spirals down by the outer parts of the 8mm hole.

Using 2 d pocket does the opposite, it goes down in a tight center spiral, and then moves out to clear the rest from is lower position in the hole. Might be a heavy load on a 2mm millbit ?

Regarding Adaptive:

Keep in mind that Adaptive Clearing is a roughing strategy, if you set Stock to Leave to 0, it will not give you a smooth, clean finish on the walls. You might set Stock to Leave at .013mm and finish the walls and island with a 2d Contour; or the walls, island, and floor by adding Roughing Passes and Stock Contours to the 2d Contour. If adding .013mm to the stock causes the toolpath to fail, reduce the Minimum Cutting Radius slightly.

 

If those two smaller holes are not already drilled, you should adjust the Stock Contours geometry. It looks like the toolpath is assuming the two holes are pre-drilled and it's roughing around them. If you run that toolpath without drilling those holes first, you will bury the tool and possibly break it.

 

Regarding the Bore:

2d Pocket is the strategy you want, adjust the Maximum Stepover to .8mm and you should be OK. Don't forget to click Finish Passes to clean it up after its roughed. In the Heights tab, set Top to Selection, and select the surface at the top of the bore, that will make the ramp start lower and you won't be cutting so much air.

Be aware that if that 2D Adaptive is your first toolpath it doesn't think there's any material in that center area and may feed right through it at your non-engagement feedrate, as well as the drilled holes that may have not been drilled yet.

The best thing you can do here is select what you DON'T want to mill as your part, turn off Machine Cavities, and select the areas you want to machine as the Stock. Don't select faces, use edges.
