Yards in Base Unit

Can someone tell me how I can add Yards or Linear Yards as a unit of measurement in the Base unit?  In the parameters, I see I can change the measurement of length from inches to yards and it will calculate it, but when I try to get it to show up in the base unit qty it still comes in inches.   I need Yards, please help.
