If I write an external program to run with Inventor will it go faster if I run Inventor invisibly? Or will it not make much difference?

Have you looked at using Inventor Apprentice?

No, I need Inventor because I want to create actual objects, which I think is impossible with apprentice, though I may be wrong.

I think you are right. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to your original question.

The short answer is yes - without the GUI it loads quicker, but it ultimately comes down to your goals.

I've found that usually you have to tap into both the Inventor and Apprentice objects anyway.

I can't speak for Inventor Apprentice, but in my experience running a headless Inventor process is a little quicker, but not massively.

Maybe it depends on what you're doing - my experience is with opening models and triggering pre-written iLogic rules that controls parts and features in the model.

One other possibility might be to use 'ThisApplication.Screenupdating = False'. This way Inventor is still visible, but the screen won't be updated until you set Screenupdating = True again. Don't know the performance effect, but it was just a thought.
