change color of a collection of objects, assembly

Is it possible to assign parts to some sort of collection/group, and apply a color (or change other properties for that matter) to the group all at once?

I know I could create a list and iterate through it, just wondering if there is any built in functionality or faster/better way?

I would create a (Custom) property and use that when going through every part and do something with them
