There may be a simple answer for this but I've been having trouble getting it don.

How can I edit my current BOM template so that I don't have to repeat editing after I place a BOM in each drawing? I have to make several changes to each BOM every time a new one is created (add columns, change column formats, change unit formats). Again, I need to modify my current BOM template.

Hi draftingH6CEU,

I typically just open my assembly template(s) and make the BOM view layout changes in that file, then save the template. Then when you use the template, it will have the BOM views setup as desired.

This works for all new files, but if you're wanting to bring in the changes to existing assembly files, I think you'll want to use the Export button (lowe left corner)  in the BOM editor (when in a file that had the settings you want) and then Import them into existing files.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

You mention BOM in drawing.  For reference Curtis answered because we call the assembly parts list the BOM and the one in the drawing the PARTS LIST.

If its in the assembly see Curtis' answer.  If it is the drawing then you need edit your styles library.

  • Make sure your project file allows Styles LIbrary>Read-Write.
  • Open the idw/dwg template from its location on the drive, not via the file>new menu.
  • In the Styles editor create a new parts list style.
  • Modify the colums to what you want.
  • Save the drawing then from the styles menu press Save and push the parts list style to your library.  If you dont save the style to the library you will get a warning message everytime you create a new file.  You can stil proceed but it gets annoying.
  • Switch back to you READ ONLY project file.
