There is actually a work around this issue (Assumning a simple view option has not been implemented yet ??):

- Right click 'Elements' in the Autodesk Nastran Model Tree and highligt all elements. Then create a section view through the 'View' tab and finally remove check mark from 'CAD Bodies' under the Autodesk Nastran tab -> Object Visibility. 

 

This is a very inconvenient way of visualising the elements, and I really look forward to a much better way of doing this, similar to what is possible in Ansys Workbench.

 

- I also want to be able to highlight and visualise where elements that fail the element quality check are located (Also if they are volume elements). This must be achieveable, e.g. by only highlighting these elements, while the rest of the geometry is visualised e.g. by a wireframe.

I do not know for sure, but I would think that most of the voters (39 currently) are interested in viewing the mesh when the results are sectioned. Viewing the internal mesh without results may indicate how the mesh progresses through the thickness which adds some value, but a mesh without results has limited used. (Add a comment if you agree or disagree.) Why not do both!

I fully angree with @John_Holtz .

It is of great importance to see the mesh distribution through the thickness after the analysis is performed.

Also it is important to add a simple tool that will define the number of cells across the thickness while creating a mesh.

@John_Holtz, yes! I agree with you. I'll take it one step further. When viewing the results of a section, probe and query nodes should only display results of nodes in (or very close) to the plane you are viewing. To illustrate, here's a screenshot of results sectioned at Y=50. I hit query results for the nodes and it's just picking nodes all over the place. Notice the one I'm showing has a Y coordinate of 47.3 so it's picking a node that is invisible behind the plane I'm viewing. You've got to keep your eye on the node coordinate or you can get really goofed up.

BTW, this got accepted back in 2018. What is the hold up?

I do agree the viewing the elements through the cross-section could be useful.
I recently lost a lot of time refining meshes around welds while having inconsistent stress distribution before I realised the mesh refining is only on the visible surface and not at all through the thickness of the part.

 

Screenshots to illustrate the issue, not the actual model. Here the mesh growth rate is set at 1.15 and you would expect the mesh to be finer also on the inside of the beam but that's not the case and can **** up your results. It also make refining the meshing on rectangular structural sections quite a lot more labor intensive if they are all fused together or not easily accessible. I'd enjoy a checkbox to refine through the thickness for solid elements.

Cross section of mesh and to be able to probe this cross section is important for mesh refinement and results analysis.
