reused frame dont mesh with line element

I made a rectangle using fram generator in Inventor. I use the function reuse in order to have only two part number as the lenght is the same on each side. When I try to mesh the, Nastran don't mesh the reused structural member, only the original one. I can't put any load or constraint at vertice cause the rectangle is not entirely meshed. I can't find a way around this problem.

Does anyone know a solution?

Thank

Hi @Anonymous

I have a question about your model. In the CAD environment in Inventor, are there parts with the same name? In particular, the parts that do not mesh in In-CAD, do they have the same name?

When you insert a duplicate part, Inventor should give it a different name (something like Part:1, Part:2, Part:3). I encountered an issue where the duplicate part was not given a different name, and that caused a problem with In-CAD.

I am not an Inventor expert, so I do not know how to create the other parts and create a new name. If you learn how to do that, please let us know!

Hi @Anonymous

Can you attach your Inventor file? (From what I can see in the image, it looks like a single .ipt part, but it could be part and assembly .iam files.)

But its easy to reproduce the project. You draw a rectangle in a sketch. Use the frame generator to assign tube to one short and one long side. Then you use the fonction reuse for both opposite side. Then you open Nastran-in-cad and make sure the frame are considered as structural member and then mesh it.

Thank you!

Hi @Anonymous

What happens when you try to add a .zip file using the attachment/browse function near the bottom of the reply dialog? (I am attaching a test zip file just to make sure the forum is working okay. There is nothing useful in my zip file Smiley Happy)

I tried with another computer and it still doesnt work. Its weird. But anyways, as it seem to be a probleme between Inventor Frame generator and Nastran-In-cad, you can make a test easily with only one reused member, as a said in the last post. Or you could give me an email adress so i could send you the file.

Thank you

HI @Anonymous,

I am seeing the same behaviour. Reused frames are not being meshed in Nastran In CAD. I have attached a zip file of the following model.

Frame Gen.jpg

If you create all the frame members individually Nastran In CAD seems to work fine and mesh all the components.

All the best,

David

Thank you for the reply... I know that if I use individual frame it is working! But the goal is to reused frame so I dont have different part number.for for the same part. I want to use this in a professionnal environnement were I won't give 4 time the same detail drawing to produce. Then I need to test the frame in nastran!

Whats the point of the reuse fonction then? It now seem a little bit useless...

Thank You!

Hi @Anonymous,

I completely agree and understand your frustration. It should be possible to use the reuse function to generate a frame for Nastran In-CAD analysis however it seems that there is an issue here and the development team will be made aware.

I only stated that creating applying the frames individually is a workaround for the time being. Is it not possible to save the cross section and apply it to many elements in one operation?

All the best,

David

Yes it is possible. But if two part have the same cross section and lenght, if you dont use the fonction reuse, two different part will be created and appear in the BOM.

Thank you

Perhaps it is necessary for the Nastran solver to have them as separate parts.  If not then this is a defect. I will let you know!

With taht logic a repetition of the same part in the same assembly, Nastran woudnt work? Even if its not in a frame assembly?

Thank you!

I have this problem.  Frame generator gave two different length W8x40 beams the same name in the tree, W8x40:3.  Now Nastran will not mesh the second W8x40.  Using 2020.  So how do i fix the issue or rename.  Inventor will not let me simply change the tree name.  Will it be necessary to reconstruct the member each time and i have not even tried that yet?  Is there a simply fix?

OK it was easy enough to just delete the member and reinsert with frame generator.  It then made it W8x40:16.  Hope this gets fixed.

This problem still remain in Inventor 2022. In a complex frame build with FG isn't a possible workaround to delete and insert all the reused member. Please develop a solution to recognize ALL FG members!
