Open results from FEMAP in Nastran Editor

Hi,

We use FEMAP (with Siemen's Simcenter Nastran), and our client uses Autodesk Nastran.

We'd like to supply results to them, which they can view in Nastran Editor.

The .dat file opens with no problem. And then in theory all they need to be able to do is open the results file which is normally a .OP2.

I see that Nastran Editor opens results in FEMAP neutral file format. We have tried exporting a FEMAP neutral file from FEMAP with the results, but they don't seem to load in the Nastran Editor.

Is there any trick to getting FEMAP to export the results in a file which Nastran Editor to open ?

Is there any way to get Nastran Editor to import results directly from a Nastran OP2 file ?

FEMAP should be able to write FNO files. FNO is the results file format that Autodesk Nastran is using. As far as I know OP2 files are typically MSC Nastran files.

Hi Fergus,

After creating the FNO file and opening the model in the Autodesk Nastran Editor,

1. Click the Model/Results tab.
2. Right-click in the graphics window.
3. Choose "Load Results"
4. Browse for the FNO file.
5. The results should load into the model tree. Choose the result you want to display, right-click > Contour.

Thank you for your quick and knowledgeable reply.

I've performed some testing to work out what is going on. I created a model in FEMAP, ran in Autodesk Nastran from the editor, opened the results in FEMAP, generated an FNO file from FEMAP and then tried to open these from a new session of Nastran Editor. 

A .dat or .nas from FEMAP opens no problem in Nastran Editor. And comparing the FNO files from FEMAP and Autodesk Nastran, the FEMAP FNO looks good, but I Nastran Editor won't recognise the results. When I have a close look at the two FNO files, I see in the Autodesk nastran file there are rows of "2020" in the header and before any results vector listings.

If I add these rows to the FEMAP FNO file (by manually editing the file), then Nastran Editor will recognise the results. 

Is there a way around this problem ? Is it possible to get Nastran Editor to recognise the results without looking for these rows of "2020" ?

Could they download an earlier version of the Nastran Editor which might not have this restriction ?

It's just it would be great if I could share my results from FEMAP with my client who is an Autodesk Nastran customer.

Apologies, all I can get to come up in the Nastran Editor is the header, rather than any results. So there must be more to it than I thought.

Hi,

One of the problems is the text "ESP" in the FEMAP version instead of "NE/" near the beginning of the file.

There may be other problems. I used the FNO Reader to convert the FEMAP FNO file to text, change the ESP to NE/, and converted the text to a new FNO file. Then I was able to view the results in the Editor. I am not sure what else the FNO Reader may have "fixed".
