Hi

I created a new material in Autodesk Inventor, But it didn't appear on the list to assign the Nastran.

How to bring that to Nastran environment.

Hello @lkirit2000 ,

Did you add that material to an Inventor material library?

In Inventor materials are created in the documents (assembly or part file).

In the Inventor material browser you need to right click on the document material and select “add to” to add that material to an Inventor material library.

When you enter the Nastran environment a default analysis is created, if no analysis already exists. Materials are by default created from the materials in the Inventor parts files. Note that changing the Inventor materials in the Inventor part files doesn’t update the material properties in your Nastran analysis.

When you want to add a new material to your Nastran analysis select Materials from the Nastran ribbon > Select material > choose from one of the Inventor material libraries in which you saved your material.

Hope this helps.

Hi @lkirit2000 ,

I think you forgot to attach the Inventor material library. Without it it's a little bit of a guess what is going on, but could it be this?

Inventor uses the Name of the material, Inventor Nastran uses the description.

Is you name and description the same? Maybe you are you looking for the name without knowing the description specified for this material?

It is located in the Materials folder of your Design Data.

Location of Design Data is either specified in Tools panel > Application Options > File tab > Design Data (Style, etc.) and/or in your Inventor Project File > Folder Options > Design Data (Style, etc.)

If the Inventor Project File > Folder Options is set to Default than the location from the Application Options is used.

So please check both.

Two other ways to find the location of your Inventor Material Library

1. Get Started > Projects and hover with your mouse over the material library.

2. In the Material Browser hover over the material library

Hi @lkirit2000

Your library file is not being attached to the forum, probably because the types of files that can be posted to the forum is restricted. I suggest that you do the following:

  1. Zip (compress) the library file.
  2. Log into the forum directly (instead of replying by email, assuming that you are replying by email).
  3. Go to your thread.
  4. Click the Reply button to reply to the post.
  5. Click the paper-clip in the "Attachments". This is located under the Reply window (where you type the notes) and under the Insert Screencast block.

Hi @lkirit2000 ,

I thought Nastran was using the Description field on the Identity tab, but it is not.

It uses the Name field on the Physical tab. In your case:

Aluminium 6061(3) = Aluminium 6082 - T6 (UP TO 20 MM THK )

Hi Roelof,

Appreciate  your valuable response.

Now it works.

So the name field on the physical tab and identical tab are different. Am I correct ?

If I create a new material, Do I need to amend the both tabs name field ?

Yes, Inventor uses the Name field on the Identity tab. Not only in the material browser but also in the iProperties, BOM, etc.

Nastran uses the Name field on the Physics tab.

I would suggest to use the same name in both fields to avoid confusion.

Hi Roelof,

Thanks for your earlier advice.  This is quick question. please see the attached image here.

Now I am creating a custom material list to run FEA. As you see below I am trying to make unique names and description in both identity and physical tab. Only I face a problem in name field in physical tab. It is not easily activates and don't accept the same name. I  have restarted PC few times. Still faces same issue ?  Is it  a b BUG or any other reason ?

Hi @lkirit2000 ,

I think it would be better to start a new post for this issue in the Inventor forum.

I know this does not answer your question, but a description is used to describe somethings. In this case the material. Why would you keep the description the same as the naming?

Hi Roelof,

appreciate your prompt response.

I also thought earlier as you same. Still Okay.

But I thought I am making this material library not just  for temporary but in a long term view.

When I select if it is have proper format, then there will be no confusion.

For steels with different grades, with in grades strength varies with thickness. This also one of the reason to have unique code for each material.
