Mass Summary

I ran a preliminary linear analysis.

Two question.

First question: can Non-Structural Masses (NSM) be used only with shell elements and not with solid elements?

Second one:

Why I get 0 in nonstructural mass even if I use NSM?

Hi @admaiora

  1. Nonstructural mass can be added to shell elements (shells, composites) and line elements (beams, pipes, rods). It cannot be added to solids. (Maybe because the nonstructural mass would be a per unit volume basis, and mass/volume would be a density. Just add the NSM to the density.)
  2. It is either a bug or Nastran's interpretation of nonstructural mass.
    1. For shell elements, the input for nonstructural mass appears in the structural mass value. (You should be able to confirm that in your example.)
    2. For bar elements, the input for nonstructural mass appears in the nonstructural mass value.
