Thicken command extents enhancements

Thicken command extents enhancements

I would like a few more options for the Thicken command extents. Specifically I would like to be able to

- Thicken To (a plane or surface)

- thicken between two planes

- thicken to the next face

- thicken assymmetrically

- thicken asymetrically

- thicken asymetrically with a negative value, so the new part ends up offset from the original face

Hi @ic198. So it turns out that in our discussion about this here, none of us realized that there already exists a command that will accomplish a "Thicken to", it's just not inside the Thicken command -- it's accomplished with a command called "Replace Face" under the 3D Model tab --> Surface panel.

While I definitely think this isn't an intuitive name OR place for this command, it does what it's intended for very well.

And regarding the other options listed... like I said on the other thread, I'm not sure those really make sense for "thicken", and I think to justify adding them, you'd have to post some specific examples of when they would be useful and practical. I have a feeling they could all be accomplished easily and with better control using existing tools.

But like I said, please post examples if you have come across situations where they would be useful and/or necessary 🙂

Hi @DRoam,

See my post from 11-29-2016 04:39 PM on the original discussion (about half way down on p2- I can't find a way to create a link to the specific post)- I talk about Replace Face, why/when it doesn't work, and also why I want to use Thicken To.

My apologies, I must have missed that.

But you didn't give any details in that post about why replace face doesn't work... and if Autodesk doesn't know why it doesn't work, they can't fix it (whether that means by fixing Replace Face or moving its functionality to "Thicken to").

Can you post an example of a situation where Replace Face doesn't work? A Part file would be best... which unfortunately would require you to create a thread for this in the general Inventor forum and post a link to it here, since we can't attach files in the Ideas forums.

Hi @DRoam

Since your post I've been trying to use Replace Face and there are many situations when it does do what I want. However here is one where it won't, and where I think Thicken To is a more logical option that making Replace Face accommodate this.
