The ability to manipulate a model while moving an object.

The ability to manipulate a model while moving an object.

I would like to be able to left click a part within a model and manipulate the model with my Spacenavigator to place the part where I want. Currently (INV2024), this is not possible and becomes clumsy when moving parts around a large model. Thank you.

When you say the phrases "a part within a model" and "moving parts around a large model", the term "model" is ambiguous, so do you mean moving assembly components around within an assembly, or do you mean moving solid bodies around within a part?

In the assembly environment, when we use the built-in "place component" command, then select the model file we want to insert, then have the assembly component at our pointer, but have not clicked to place it yet, we have a set of really nice tools available to us when we right-click.  These allow us to rotate the part in 90 degree increments around the X, Y, & X axes (of the component, not the main assembly), as many times as we want, before we place the component.

However, once we have placed the component, we can not get those tools back.  Then our only options are to use the tools on the 'Position' panel of the Assemble tab, called "Free Move" & "Free Rotate", which are as labeled 'free'.  Meaning no controlled movements or rotations by specific numerical values, or set increments.

So, I created an external iLogic rule, and placed a button for it in my Assemble ribbon.  It lets me either 'pre-select' one or more components, or select one or more components after the rule starts.  If there was no pre-selection, then it lets me pick one component at a time, until I am done picking them, then once selection is done, it shows a small dialog with a list in it.  It lets me choose one of the axes, by letter.  Once one is selected, and clicked OK button, it shows another small dialog with a list in it.  This one lets me choose from common angles (in degrees).  Once an angle is chosen, and clicked OK, the component is rotated around the selected axis, by the selected amount.  Then the dialogs continue appearing, until I click the Cancel button on one of them.  So, I can string multiple rotations, of multiple axes, at multiple angles, before canceling.  Then canceling leaves the part where you rotated it to, instead of returning it to its original orientation.  No features added to the model browser tree, similar to 'free' move or rotate usage.

If you mean moving a solid body in a part...no such luck there.  The only option is to use a MoveFeature.  They can be used to both move and rotate a body by specific amounts, and can have multiple move, and multiple rotations nested into the same feature.  Due to the way these are modeled, especially in a parametric modeling environment like Inventor, I highly doubt a 'free' movement / rotation type tool will ever exist for that.

Yes, I meant moving parts within an assembly. I'm aware of the tools you have highlighted but my issue is when wanting to move that item to say the far end of the assembly, I'm not able to manipulate the assembly using my 3DConnexion Space Navigator while I have left clicked the part. It becomes a case of releasing the part, re-orientating the assembly before grabbing the part once more. Very cumbersome.

Hi all, I'm closing this thread as I've discovered that by using the "Free Move" command as suggested above allows me to manipulate the assembly with the Space Navigator. Thanks again.
