Temporarly change the colour of a part or assembly within an assembly.

I build outdoor stages by stacking scaffold uprights on top of each other and connecting them together. All of the uprights are based on .25 meter increments except for some that are in 8 inch increments. When I use the 8 in uprights, they are on top of the .25 m uprights. It can become difficult to differentiate between them.

 

It would help me quite a lot if I could select all x assemblies, for example, and turn them blue until I'm done building the stage, when I can turn them back to their original colour.

You can change the appearance of parts in an assembly without it changing the appearance of the part in other assemblies. You can then clear this appearance override later with a couple clicks.

 

Just select the part from the assembly, and use the appearance menu to change it.

If you later decide you want to reset the color to how it normally is (the appearance you set when editing the part directly), use the appearance clear tool:

And it will return to normal:
