Studio Animation File Types

Studio Animation File Types

I've just getting my head around the difference between video file types and codecs, so bear with me if I make the odd faux pas

When saving an amination you're limited to AVI or WMV

However, it is possible to download and install Codecs that cover other file types.

Surely, Windozes stores the information about which file types and codecs in the registry.

Why can't Inventor access this information and update the file types available in the Save File dialogue box?

That may not be the issue.  Not all CODECs are designed for directly encoding animation, and of those which are many are limited in capability through file size/run length or resolution.

If your goal is higher quality animations I strongly recommend going down the "industry standard" route of rendering to frames first and then using post-processing software to compile them into a finished product.  It sounds like a lot more work, but it really isn't, and there are substantial benefits.

Strikes me as surprising that a company which produces 3D Studio Max - presumably Inv Studio is a light weight version as somethings are the same - expects users to get post-processing software ! ! !

I'm not after HD or even high quality, but reasonable quality and reasonable size, easily.

Thats the preferred method in 3DSMAX as well (and Maya, Blender, Navisworks... pretty much everything) for producing anything other than very basic learning work.  Most of those programs include the tools necessary to handle the post processing, as well as the ability to set up a pipeline to automate the process.

If 3DS Max includes these tool, why can't Adesk include post-processing tools with Inv Studio?

Okay, you can't answer that question. If they did this whole topic wouldn't be needed.

However, they don't.

I want to get the best I can without having to buy more software.

Which means Inv either includes a better 'Save File' dialogue box that includes ALL the files types for which I've got Codecs or they provide the post processing, which I guess would give me access to these additional file types.
