When making parts for CNC, you need to have an inside corner radius to allow for the tool. So when you have screw heads that need to sit flat near these corners, you have to spotface. It's pretty much the only time I need to use spotfacing. To get rid of material that interferes with the screw head.
In Inventor, the spotface feature disappoints. I have a profile I want to CNC and then on a secondary op, add a spot face. But the spot face leaves me with the need to add a 2nd Inventor feature to the hole.
Ideally it clears out all material above the spot face or gives the option to extend the spot face in the opposite direction.
