Sketch dimension alignment.

Sketch dimension alignment.

Hi all

When putting dimensions on sketches from point to point, the dimension snaps to be aligned with horizontal/vertical as a default.

It would be preferable if it was possible to either choose between aligned with horizontal/vertical or the shortest distance, or disable the snapping.

We often design things a couple of degrees out of true and the dimensions snapping to horizontal is less than optimal. I know that one can manually change the dimensions one at a time, but its quite tedious and wasteful when a option to change the default would solve it.

@KR-Hillerslev,

Could you provide a sample part/sketch to help others understand the issue?

Have you used the aligned dimension left-click option? After selecting two points, left click between the points when you see the aligned glyph near the cursor. Aligned dimensioning is selected.

I could see though having a default would eliminate the extra click all the time.

Of course there is the right-click menu to select dimension type, but now that requires user to click, move mouse, click again.

Yes, I have used that option. Its works fine when the two points are far out af alignment with vertical/horizontal. However, when the two points are basically parallel , but not quite, with vertical/horizontal, its almost impossible to place the mouse where it can be selected.

Its also a problem when one have made a sketch with a bunch of point-to-point dimensions and it then needs to be turned a bit. All the vertical/horizontal dimensions are then out of alignment. Its very rare that we need a dimension to be vertical/horizontal, we often need it to be aligned instead.

@KR-Hillerslev,

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Now I understand your situation. Yes, a default dimension type would certainly be beneficial in your workflow and likely others could benefit too.
