Sheet Metal Slot And Tab

Sheet Metal Slot And Tab

Hello,

Have you guys seen the new Solidworks slot and tab feature! Autodesk you must bring this feature to Inventor it would be a life saver! We have been loyal to Autodesk for years, but this one feature has us seriously considering a few seats of Solidworks.

Check it out, and help push this to the top!

Issac, I have to say YES YES YES to this feature. We currently do this manually which is very time consuming. This should be brought to the to of the list for improving sheet metal tools. Regards, Ivon

Now THAT would be awsome! And not just with Sheet metal but also in frame generator!!!

That makes assembling the frames in production a breeze!

Can I vote up more that once???

I slot n tab almost every part created on a cnc router.

This would be a VERY NICE time saver for me.

This would be a great feature to have in sheetmetal, but the command also needs to be available for non-sheetmetal as well.  We spend many hours creating tab/slots to help with assembly.

Watch this video of the new SW feature in action on a non-sheetmetal part....SWEET.

Notice in the video (t=2:56) when he hovers over an edge, it shows what body the common edge belongs to.  That is nice, otherwise you would just be guessing.

I think this is a great command !!!

I would possibly use it to create spacing tabs when nesting sheetmetal for waterjet/CNC/plasma cutting.  (Maybe add this function to the new nesting program ???)

tell the autodesk that they include the same as solidwork the holes with real thread and bolt with thread

Modifying the status from Accepted to Future Consideration.  Would you all expect this to be only available within a single sheet metal part file (that would fold or roll into itself)?  Or would you expect it to be available within the assembly environment, and placed between two non-related parts?

Dan,

Not sure I understand what you're asking, but I would expect it to work in the assembly environment so that the tab/slot feature can be added between two RELATED parts.  It also should work with sheet metal parts, just like the SW video I linked to above.

Between assemblys! We are making all sorts of sheet metal Constructions where we join plates together. We often manually create tabs for easyer manufactoring.

Please do not limit it to sheet metal. Frame generator also benefits greatly from tab and slot!

And I would hope the functionality would be available in both single part and assembly. For instance you add tabs to a single part and the interference between to parts would create the slots.

I think having it available as a "general command" that can be used anywhere inside Inventor would be very helpful, not just for sheetmetal parts.

I bet if it was added to the program, we all could figure out different ways to use it.

The amount of time and money savings in fabrication would be huge (no jigs, no measuring, no chance of fabricator error).

Currently I wait till the design is finished and then add the tab a slot, usually manually, instead of skeletal design.

this is very time consuming and then we do a copy design and change a couple dimensions and guess what. i get to fix all the tab and slot again.

I want this feature so bad... please make it available in all related environments.

Yes!  Frame Generator is the main reason I've stuck with Inventor (other than the fact that I like Autodesk and being a contrarian and reluctant to join the trendy Soliworks wave).  But, tab and slot is incorporated into almost every one of our designs now for cutting 3/16" and 1/4" steel for welded bracket assemblies.  Total hassle and time suck completing this in Inventor manually.  My subscription is up in 40 days or so and need to make a decision now.  Leaning towards Solidworks.
