Sheet Metal Flat Pattern to Folded Body

Sheet Metal Flat Pattern to Folded Body

Would like sheet metal tools to be able to take a flat pattern and make multiple folds using the lines in a single sketch. This idea is the reverse of today's Inventor sheet metal methodology yet follows how parts are actually made.

For example, this new methodology should take seconds to complete, once the flat pattern is completed:

  • Draw the flat pattern as shown below.
  • Open the "new" fold tool.
  • Select the construction line for fold #1, enter the angle and direction.
  • Do the same for #2 thru #5 (each fold is shown in a phantom representation until the "OK" button).
  • Click "OK" to finish the feature.

Here my question to the community and the response as to why it doesn't work this way today:

The fact that you do not understand how to use one sketch for multiple features does not require a software change.

@Mario.VanWiechen Please show me how to do this. I've had several experts tell me this is possible but takes a lot of work. Is there a link to a YouTube video? Or is this something easily explained here? Either would be appreciated, and I do appreciate your comment.

I was able to figure this out with the help of the Autodesk Inventor Community. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

However, I still like my idea for enhancing the Fold tool, as described above.

Here is a high-view summary of how the Fold tool works today using one sketch:

  1. Ensure your fold lines are below a bend relief. This allows the flap or flange to be folded.
  2. Ensure as you fold the part, that the part remains against the sketch. This allows the same sketch to be used multiple times.
  3. Share the sketch.
