Did you mean:

Save all thumbnails with white background.

Save all thumbnails with white background.

Don't know how easy this is to implement, but I think that all thumbnails should save with a white background for better clarity.

Now that the BOM can export thumbnails it would be better to have white backgrounds for all thumbnails, otherwise when you print it is difficult to see what you are looking at:

We have had the same problem with users changing the backgrounds of their interface in a large corporation handing up with backgrounds of cats or people in a pub... in the background of the thumbnails of library parts and others components,

Although it can be funny at first it can be difficult to change on library parts in Vault or BOM... I rather prefer to keep the background at all time saved cleaned and white as mentioned above.

This is the funniest thing I have ever read on Autodesk forums! I'm going to change my background to a cat in a pub from now on.

Catisfaction!!

Really appreciated you to try the enhancement on R2018.1 about BOM thumbnails exporting. And the white background is requested when thumbnails exported. It sounds that you just want to keep all the thumbnails images with the same format when exported for all the engineers. What about the thumbnail images with transparent background?

Transparent would work too. It's really just about having them thumbnails printing clearly. The gradient is a bit muddy, plus it uses more ink.

I would like to see this as an option - we have times were we have the background Black to show point clouds, vs White for presentation, vs gradient for model or in-progress.  So I would not want my thumbnails to go to all white without a setting or option for choosing this or even setting up what file type uses it, etc.

Here's a link to an iLogic workaround in case it helps someone else:

Having the thumbnail background in both Autodesk Vault and exports to excel is important.  The lack of consistency in thumbnail backgrounds drives my users crazy and looks totally unprofessional.  It gets worse when sharing exported BOM to excel with all the background being different.

I totally understand the need and desire to give each user the option to change the background color of their design environment but there needs to be the option to also select the background color for thumbnails so they are consistent.

I have some users using an app called All thumbs and it works great but is not supported by its orginator and Autodesk.

Come on Autodesk, this is a great suggestion for a change!

AllThumbs stopped working for me so I uninstalled it. Even when it did work it often got stuck and I'd be left with a white background that I'd have to change again.

@SharkDesign

Can you tell me what version of Inventor you were running when you had problems and it stopped working?

Thanks

Think it was immediately after installing 2020, but you might have fixed
that now.

I'd also like to endorse this idea!

It would be great to have consistency with the thumbnail background while allowing the users to have their own background and color scheme.

Please, Autodesk, enable this great idea!

The ideal would be an option not only for white, but the possibility of using an independent background.

Hi I put it in point 31 🙂 They should solve the BOM together. BOM He's 20 years old. 🙂

Maybe it will add to someone? If yes, then vote. It was late yesterday. 🙂

Possible uses:

Dark BOM = Point 29

Export BOM to excel and print = Point 6

it would be nice to print directly with BOM = Point 14

Maybe it will add to someone. Maybe it would be a transparent solution for a white background?

Using these thumbnails in printed BOM's is helpful when picking parts off the shelf but if they all had a uniformly white background that would visually help.

I have tried to implement an ilogic code based on when was mentioned here:
https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-forum/is-there-a-way-to-refresh-all-thumbnails/m-p/7242096#M...
My only issue was that most of my files are vaulted and set to read only so it doesn't work. ☹

I am working around this issue with ilogic that changes the background to white then takes screenshot and then exports the bom list. But taking so many screenshots for every part is time consuming.
There should be an option at bom that wipes out the background from thumbnails.

Do we have any updates on the matter?

@dan_szymanski

In addition to the white or transparent background, please also save the thumbnails always with a resolution of 512x512 px.

This is helpful when using the "extra large icons" option in Windows Explorer.

As we can learn on another forum post, some of the thumbnails are saved only with a resolution of 180x180 px today:

"... then we keep the thumbnail resolution as 180x180 px. If you batch import files (which may not be visible on the screen when they're saving), then Inventor generates the thumbnail as resolution of 512x512 px ..."
