If a derived parameter loses its source because a feature or reference is deleted, Inventor automatically turns it into a static user parameter — without a clear warning. This breaks design intent and can cause model errors. I propose warnings, parameter status indicators, and diagnostic/repair tools.
Problem
In Inventor, parameters can be derived from other parameters, sketches, features, or external references.
When the source of such a parameter is deleted, Inventor automatically converts it into a static user parameter.
The value remains, but the parameter loses its link, is no longer dynamic, and no longer updates with the model. This can lead to inconsistent or broken parametric behavior, often unnoticed by the user.
Proposed Improvements
- Clear warning when a parameter is about to lose its reference.
- Provide options, such as:
- reassign a new source
- intentionally convert to a static parameter
- remove the parameter
- Visual indicators for parameter states:
- linked/dynamic
- static
- broken/invalid reference
- A diagnostic tool that identifies all parameters with lost or broken references.
