Reference Parts and Shaded Drawing Views

Reference Parts and Shaded Drawing Views

Reference parts and shaded drawings views do not play nice together.

#1 Why can I not shade reference parts in a drawing view? There should be four Line Style options: As Reference Parts, As Parts (Non-Shaded), As Parts, and Off. With As Parts it will use the style of the view... i.e. if the view is shaded then the parts are shaded, if the view isn't shaded then the parts are not shaded.

#2 When the view is shaded but the reference parts are not, the reference parts "bleed through" the shading and do not show proper hidden line / line removal. This makes interpreting the view very difficult.

In the first image, with no reference parts, the views look good. However, notice in the second image where you cannot tell that the Valve component goes through a hole. It seems to be floating on top of the assembly.

It is a major issue for those of us involved in large assemblies with
sub-assemblies that need to be simplified and set to reference or anyone
using reference models to show the mounting surfaces or environment into
which we are placing our parts.

It isn't even an idea. It's a bug that needs to be fixed.

Yeah that would be my initial take on this as well!
Fix it Autodesk!

@Anonymous does "Accepted" mean in process and coming soon to 2020???  Just had another engineer here desperately ask how to make reference parts shaded on his assembly views as he's using that for major customer presentations and having non-reference parts shaded and reference parts wire-frame looks like ****!!!

"Well Mr. (potential) Customer, sorry but that's the way the software is.  If you want it to look pretty like the bazillion dollar machine we're quoting, you can call 415-507-5000"

I will say he was a lot less than happy when I told him it was impossible.  😠  PUH-lease at the least add an additional view option such as Edit View/Model State/Line Style --> As Reference Parts, As Parts, As Shaded Parts, Off..... PUH-lease?!?!?!?!?  😟

It's in process but not for 2020. If you want to try the latest out you can apply for the Inventor Feedback/Beta community using

http://Autode.sk/InventorBeta

You'll find a "Release Candidate" build there (we support using that for production use, if you happen to need to get a drawing view for that bazillion dollar machine done.....).

This idea has been implemented within Autodesk Inventor 2021. You now have the ability to set "Edges as Reference, Shaded" and "Edges as Parts, Shaded", as well as the legacy options "Edges as Reference", "Edges as Parts" or "Off". Special thanks to everyone who cast a vote for it.

@dan_szymanski  We tip our hats to you and your team!  Many thanks!!!  Now if you can make it understand MM is millimeters and IN is inches we'd be super happy (or at least allow us a toggle in settings we can select if we want).
