Presentation Bill of Material (BOM)

Presentation Bill of Material (BOM)

We have started to use the Inventor Presentation environment for both our internal assembly instructions but now externally facing instructions for service, repair, and other type things. One thing that is missing is the ability to adjust the BOM for the presentation. What we need:

  1. Add & Remove rows
  2. Group and Ungroup Subassemblies

Other Technical Publication solutions refer to this as the "Manufacturing" mBOM and/or "Service" sBOM. I'm proposing a pBOM for Inventor (ok, the name might need a bit of work)

A few examples of how we'd use it:

We buy a motor complete and install it in the vehicle when it is new. However certain components fail in the field and need to be replaced. I'd like to add these components (for example the TurboCharger) to the Presentation BOM. Ideally, I'd be able to associate these new items with existing models within the presentation. So with the motor example, all of the added items would be associated with the existing motor assembly for ballooning and component identification.

We sell replacement "kits". A part fails in the field but we want to ensure the customer gets all the required components. We'd like to group these components into new sub-assemblies within the Presentation BOM.

We have parts that are required for manufacturing but we don't want to identify them in the customer facing documentation. We want them shown in the model, but not called out in the BOM, PartsList or Balloon. These components we'd like to suppress or turn off in the BOM.

AutoCAD Mechanical actually has all the tools we'd love to have within the Presentation environment. I'm able to create multiple BOMS and manage each one on its own.

Do you think that the Vault BOM or even Fusion PLM would be useful for managing released BOMs?

Paul,

It's not a matter of managing released BOMS but managing the data for different "consumers". I have a vision of generating 3D PDF or DWFX to provide interactive viewables to our machinists, welders, assemblers and also our service techs and most importantly our customers. Each of these data consumers need to see the BOM in different variations.
