possibility to compare parts

It would be very useful to have the possibility to compare different versions of a part.

Compare Volume, compare features... compare iproperties

'What's new' report after new version
 
 

Problem:

After a new version is created Inventor must be able to tell me what the differences are between the current version and the previous version of the document. Users like to know what changed in the drawing/model when a newer version is available.

 

The differences to be detected:

- Content change of BOM. (What is added/removed?)

- Volume/mass/material/other properties of document changed

- change of faces (color, position, chamfer added/removed)

 

Manual run: (from Inventor)

User selects two versions from Vault or browses on network. 

 

Auto run: (From Vault)

Rules can be set when this function must be executed. For example when state is set to 'Released', the category = "designs" and the file extension = ".iam".  The task is placed in the queue of the job processors.

 

Manual run: (from Vault)

User selects two versions in Vault Client History table. Function can run on local host or placed in the queue of the job processors.

 

Result:

Result is stored in a file and can be viewed again in a later time. Some results stored in this file can be used as in the change description of the CAD file.

Yes, a feature to compare parts and assemblies and parts within assembly would be highly appreciated!

My company is producing hundreds of similar-looking assemblies with very subtle, but critical, differences. It would be great to just run a comparison tool to figure out which part of the assembly is different.

This is one of my most desired features to date. I am a long time inventor user and i am mainly designing metal castings. I often receive files from suppliers for review, and have to compare these to my original design.
The "trick" with the derive & subtract functionality is known to me for a long time.
I am also using this to show or calculate an internal volume of a part for example. 
However, for complex casted parts this often does not work, you will get an error message that the bolean can not be computed. The same goes for the interference analyzer. (also cant compute to complex parts)
I think the main reason why these two fail is that the parts have a lot of faces, and most of the time in my case 99% of them are exactly the same as in my original design.

I think it would be great if there was a method to compare objects within Inventor/Vault as well. This would especially be useful so that a user could create revisions or unique part numbering based on this. An example would be, 2 parts with the same profile and length but with differing numbers of holes. If Inventor/Vault could recognize this and assign the next number in a sequence to each varying part. Our company creates many similar parts but there are slight variations within one project on similar parts and we have to do a lot of manual data entry in order to get unique part numbering. As stated in a comment above, this would be a huge leap in efficiency for a production facility. Not as many redundant shapes floating around with different part numbers.

Agreed.  What I'd like to see is from the Vault side (which would be IV version based) but using AI to spit out visually what changed from Release Version 1 to New Version in Review and getting processed in a Change order to spit out everything that changed.  Essentially write the Change Notice for us.  With "AI" being the latest click word seems like a perfect opportunity for AI to help the Inventor/Vault world.  Where I see this coming into play is with ability to use MBD and the LMV (large model viewer) and truly getting to a world with out 2D drawings and paperless.

The last big hurdle to over come in MBD is notating changes and rev bubbles in a model to indicate change.

If we had a tool to show us the changes in the model the Change Notice could essentially write itself.  Or show us the change on demand.  Having a compare tool really makes MBD realistic, which use to be just a dream.

Good to hear it's being considered....

 

In addition from the item world, would be really helpful if this tool could be used in Items and Change Orders. For us....that's where our people would do the compare. The old 3rd party tool worked by it was really cumbersome to use when comparing drawings. But, at least there was something for 2D.

At this point  beggers can't  be be choosers.....something is better ant not having a tool at all 😁

This would be a very helpful tool. In our company we design a significant amount of sheet-metal parts in one assembly. When the assembly is almost complete, we have to already request quotes from different sheet-metal suppliers, even if the design is not final. So we send the DXF's and STEP files of these sheet-metal parts to the supplier for them to be able to make an accurate quote. Meanwhile the design of some of the sheet-metal parts iterates a few times, possibly with minor changes though. When the design is final, the order to make the sheet-metal parts is sent to the supplier, but for some sheet-metal parts we need to send them the updated DXF's and STEP files. But the big question then is, which sheet-metal parts have changed compared to the versions we sent to the supplier in the quotation phase?

 

An easy way to find out which (sheet-metal) parts have changed since the first sent versions would be very welcome.

It would be useful in Revit as well. Our clients need hundreds of slightly different assemblies built from reusable parts, which must currently be manually scheduled. If we notice an overlapping schedule we combine them to reduce the number of printed sheets, but it would save so much time to be able to compare the total counts for Specialty Equipment families within every assembly.
