Perpendicular angle dimension in drawings to avoid creating sketches

Perpendicular angle dimension in drawings to avoid creating sketches

Hi,

What I would like is an option when creating an angle dimension to create the dimension by using one of the selected line, and a "fake" line that is perpendicular to the other selected line.

First, you select both lines, right click, options, perpendicular :

Then, it creates the fake perpendicular line using the selected line that is further away from the cursor. So, basicly put the cursor between the "new" line you want and the correct selected line. Simply click to create the dimension like any other dimensions.

The end result would look like this :

Right now, the only way to have a dimension like this is to create a sketch in the view, project a geometry, create a small line, and then dimension using that line. This is extremely time consuming when you have multiple angles to detail. And 90% of the shops we work for want their angle cut dimensioned that way.

Try this to create dimensions similar to the 2 3/16" shown in your example:

  1. Activate the dimension tool in a drawing.
  2. Hover over the end vertex of a line.
  3. Click on the green dot that appears.
  4. Hover the opposite end vertex.
  5. Click on the green dot that appears.
  6. Drag your mouse pointer horizontally or vertically away from the drawing view until a dimension appears.
  7. Click to place the dimension.

You could also use the existing intersection functionality.

i do not have problems with the 2 3/16" dimension, I am talking about the angle dimension, the 36°.

I completely miss-read your post, sorry.

Try modeling the cut in the part with the angle you need on the drawing, and getting the sketch dimensions.

You could also include any end planes (from frame generator/content center) or the model origin planes in the drawing view.  Then dimension to those dashed lines.

Both workarounds are not as simple as a "alternate-angle" tool, however you should be able to use them today.

I voted for it!

I have combined this idea with others and proposed a slightly different work flow, check it out and vote for it as well!

How do you add or toggle the perpendicular option to the pop-up menu?
