Part/Assembly Setting to be Visible in Model and Invisible in Drawing

Part/Assembly Setting to be Visible in Model and Invisible in Drawing

There are many "parts" in our systems that are not needed to be shown in the BOM or drawing but are necessary to design around when creating a system. Some of these are mechanical maintenance clearances, egress clearances, door clearances, ark flash clearances, etc. Currently we have these as transparent boxes that are placed as needed. However when it comes to the drawing we have to create separate view reps with their visibility turned off entirely so that they don't clutter or block components when placing views and detailing a system. It would be nice to have a setting to toggle for parts that will make them only visible in the model and invisible for drawing views.

How would this be different from toggling them off in the view reps?

Or you can set the BOM Occurrence as REF in the model and on the IDW you can edit the view to ignore REF parts.

Setting the model as REF can be done 1 of 2 ways.

  • If it that model will always be ref go into that file and then TOOL>DOCUMENT SETTINGS and set he Default BOM Structure to REFERENCE.
  • If it's normal sometimes the change it at the assembly where it's consumed.  So in your uplevel iam find that component select and right click and go down to BOM Structure and Pick REFERENCE.

Then Edit the view in the IDW and go to the Model State tab (this is in 2021 and earlier versions) and under the Reference data pick the "REFERENCE DATA SEPARATELY an din the Display Style pick OFF.

As @jacob.ellerbrock mentioned you can also control it w/ View Reps.  Sound like the easiest would be to set these parts REF at the component level (ipt or iam) and then when placed in the uplevel will already be REF and when get to the IDW edit 1 setting in the View edit tab and your automated to ignore all those REF parts.   REFERENCE parts are automatically ignored in the BOM.  If you use Vault you can still see the where used of all those REFERENCE parts if you ever need to tweak the those REFERENCED parts globally.

Hope that helps and if so, probably cancel the Idea to help the Moderators have less ideas to sift thru.

The problem with view reps is we would have to create view reps for 1000's of assemblies just to not show these 1 or 2 models in the drawings, which is currently how we are achieving this. But this is time consuming and insanely repetitive

and also there is Reference material in our top level models that is required to be shown in drawings.

Which is why I suggested something along the lines of a toggle in the part model itself so that you can toggle it once and it updates for everywhere it is used as opposed to manually updating everywhere it is used.
