Option to deactivate sketch Visibility in Right Click menu

Option to deactivate sketch Visibility in Right Click menu

A non-active visible sketch can be made Invisible in the Model Tree. However, it would be easier to right-click on any geometry from said non-active sketch and then toggle visibility directly from the menu.

Click part priority then click on the sketch then right click.

Ah, yes. That does the job. Thank you!

You can use this to copy parts from a non-active assembly too. I use this all the time to grab fittings for tube & pipe. If you turn off the sketch at the lowest level possible and then as you go up the tree, they will stop showing up all the time. It is very annoying. When you do this it will sometimes not recognize parts in the active assembly and you have to toggle between assembly and part priority

Shawn's solution only works if you actually want to also hide the Part that the Sketch is in. It doesn't allow you to hide the Sketch itself, whether from the parent assembly or the Part itself.

I still think the Idea is valid. We should be able to right-click on part of a sketch and turn off the Visibility of the sketch, without having to find the sketch in the browser first.

My solution works for just the sketch. See Screencast.

I  think it's working in T&P because those sketches are within a skeleton part, they're not within a Part that actually contains any visible geometry. I think what you're doing is actually hiding the Skeleton part, and therefore the sketch. But if that sketch were in a Part with visible geometry, you'd be hiding the Part as well.

Do me a favor, right-click on one of those sketches (with Part priority active), and do a Find in Browser. I'm guessing it'll take you to some kind of skeleton Part with only the sketch and no other geometry. Am I correct?

In T&P it goes to the route. In the frame generator it goes to the skeleton part like you said. In the case you are referring to I think it would be best to have the sketches either consumed, deleted, or visibility turned off at the lowest possible level. Then they would not be seen in upper level assemblies. A lot of people complain about the frame generator skeletons being turned on when a 3D sketch is edited. Turning the sketch visibility to off in the skeleton part prevents that.

Correct, and that's what this idea is about. Open up a Part (a non-content center part that you can edit). Find a sketch, either consumed or not. If it's not already visible, turn its visibility on. Now, from the graphics area, right-click on some element of the sketch (line, work point, dimension, etc.). There is no Visibility toggle.

That's what this idea is asking for.

I took it as the idea was looking to turn off the visibility of a non-active sketch in a non-active assembly from within a active assembly and it seems to have resolved the request. Since you can right click on a sketch in the window and find that sketch in the browser and turn it off fairly easy I'm not seeing the added benefit from what you are describing.

"A non-active visible sketch..." -- a sketch which is not active (i.e., not being edited), but is visible. Doesn't mention anything about the sketch being in a sub-component.

Still, nothing mentioned about the sketch being in a sub-component. It seems to me the wording is very clear. The idea is requesting to be able to turn off the visibility of a visible SKETCH (not a Part containing a Sketch) by right-clicking on geometry from the Sketch in the graphics window. It's a valid request and multiple people have voted for it. So even if it resolved the OP's specific situation (which I still have doubt that it does, and he hasn't responded yet to clarify), it's still a valid request and I think it should remain active.

You said "Since you can right click on a sketch in the window and find that sketch in the browser and turn it off fairly easy I'm not seeing the added benefit from what you are describing." To me that's crazy. That's like saying because we can right-click an Assembly and find it in the browser and turn it off from there, we might as well remove the "Visiblity" toggle from the right-click menu for assemblies.

Don't take all this the wrong way--I'm not trying to have an argument or anything. Just trying to defend an idea that I think is a very valid one and was stated very clearly.

We can right-click an assembly, part, or work feature in the graphics window and turn its visibility off from there. There's no reason we shouldn't be able to do the same with Sketches. That's all I'm saying. And I think that's what the idea description states as well.

Since the person that made the request said "Ah, yes. That does the job. Thank you!". I think I understood just fine. I am not interested in engaging in a mindless "forum battle" about who is wrong or who is right. The persons issue is resolved a that is what matters. Have a good day.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I wrote that first comment without fully testing the solution first suggested by @shawn.payne. I assumed that it'd work, didn't think the idea would survive anyways and was in a rush. I shouldn't have written it, especially since you got into kind of an argument over it. Sorry for wasting your time.

Moving on, as @DRoam correctly identified the suggested solution did not fix my original situation. I wished for a visibility toggle upon right clicking any un-opened/inactive sketch in an active part. The idea did not originally relate to assemblies or T&P.

Turned into a childish pissing match. Sorry it didn't help.

Yeah, well, sorry to be the cause of this. Hope it doesn't affect your day. Thanks for trying anyway, and happy holidays.

All is well. No worries.

Haha, agreed, no worries. Thanks for updating us after testing Shawn's suggestion, @Anonymous. If anything, the discussion in the meantime helped clarify the area needing improvement. As Shawn said, all is well. Now hopefully Autodesk will notice and get this one implemented! Cheers.

I also would love this feature, and am surprised to find that it doesn't exist.

And I also understood this request exactly as @DRoam interpreted it - there's a basic sketch in my part or assembly that I don't want to see, so I right-click on it and want to make it go away. The solution that @Anonymous presented  (Click part priority then click on the sketch then right click.) doesn't work in general. If do you it in an assembly, it hides the entire part. If you do it in a part, there is no right-click option for "visibility". In all cases you have to select the sketch in the browser.

No right-click toggle for sketch visibility (Assembly level) | Search | Autodesk Knowledge Network

I thought it was worth commenting to make it clear that this one has not been "solved" and still should be implemented. It's one of those things that boggles the minds of SolidWorks users. "I clicked on the thing I want to modify, now let me modify it. Don't make me move the mouse somewhere else instead."

I found out you can just _left_ click on something in the sketch and then the right most icon that pops up will allow you to hide the whole sketch.

@julius.ziegler.79 Nice pickup, that works! Thanks. And in typical inventor style, it's beautifully inconsistent.

This is half of a solution at least (at part level). At assembly level, right-clicking on a visible part sketch and and choosing "visibility" hides the entire part instead. And there's no left-click option like there is at part level.

At least now Inventor has recently made "Find in Browser" automatic, so it's less work to located the sketch that you want to turn invisible.

Keep at it Inventor. You'll get there one day... and by "there" I mean where most other programs have been for many years. Including some of your own programs (*ahem* AutoCAD and revision clouds).  🙂
