Master sheet for shared views and annotations across iPart drawing sheets

Master sheet for shared views and annotations across iPart drawing sheets

Current limitation

In an Inventor drawing with many sheets that each show a different iPart member of the same factory, every sheet has its own independent views, dimensions, and text annotations. When copying views from one sheet to another, you can duplicate the existing annotations and then switch the referenced iPart member, but the copied dimensions and texts are no longer associatively driven by a “master” sheet; later changes must be repeated manually on each sheet.

Proposed solution

Introduce a master sheet concept in drawings that allows other sheets to reference its views and annotations as associative instances. Linked sheets would:

  • Reference the same base and projected views as the master sheet, but with a per‑sheet override for the iPart member (factory member) used by those views.
  • Inherit all view positions, scales, section/detail views, dimensions, symbols, leaders, and text notes as linked objects rather than independent copies.
  • Update automatically on all linked sheets when geometry, dimensions, or annotations are added, removed, or edited on the master sheet (including style and text changes).
  • Allow limited local overrides on a per‑sheet basis (for example: hide/show specific dimensions, add extra sheet‑specific notes) without breaking the associative link to the master.
  • Provide a clear management UI in the browser, e.g. “Master sheet” and “Linked sheets”, with commands like “Create linked sheet from master”, “Break link”, and “Sync from master”.

Benefit

Such a master‑sheet mechanism would dramatically reduce repetitive work when documenting many iPart instances of the same part, because common views and annotations would be authored only once and reused associatively. This would lower the risk of inconsistent dimensions or missed updates between sheets, improve drawing quality, and save significant time in projects with large iPart families or similar configuration workflows.
