Make it possible to have a complete assembly in 1 file

Now we have 100/1000/1000 different parts within a project, thus 100/1000/1000 files to be generated.

Just like tekla does, 1 file, everything inside, no need to save my files again and again.

This could be easier to rename parts, etc... and i guess a lot faster to load!

When you want to place a part of an other assembly in the main assembly, you click the file, it shows al the parts in it and you can select the part you need.

Curious if other people share the same opinion, or why we shouldn't do that.

I think I would have to vote against this.

  • I don't think this would play well with Vault and Items.
  • How do you detail the 1000 parts to build them?  Still have a 1000 idws?
  • How do you do iproperties?  Iproperties drive the description in the BOMs/Part List as well as a lot of data in Title blocks of the IDW.

My $.02

Fusion has a single model environment. It works well when you are designing bespoke items without many library parts. Solidworks has a hybrid mode. Parts can be created in the assembly environment, saving all that file management hassle. Parts can also be referenced in, in the 'traditional' manner. I like the sound of that.

Hi mikeh,

I know my idee here would haul over everything ever build within Inventor, or everything around it.

But hey, it's an idea station and why not, it's one of my biggest frustrations during more then a decade 😛

And i really appreciate to hear other opinions!

"I don't think this would play well with Vault and Items."

i agree, they would have a lot of work to rebuild everything, but it's not impossible if other company's can, Autodesk too

Let's compare it with autocad blocks, it's also possible to have the same block with different (let's call them iproperties 🙂 in 1 file.

A would suggest a more database(d) structure, like xml

Hmmm, though question, and maybe my answer isn't an answer on your question but Inventor should make them itself.

If you see the multiple threads about "Automated drawings", it shouldn't be something to spend 60% of your time like it is now!

I push on the button and all of your files generated, with a lot of options for exporting, iproperties, ....

I agree you have to "finish" drawings yourself, but how hard can it be for steel shapes to make a simple drawing with everything on it?

I created it myself for steel shapes, so why can't Autodesk provide it for us?
