Make Components: Use Body names as iProperties

Make Components: Use Body names as iProperties

I love to work with a master model technique where I use “Make Components” to create parts and assemblies from a multi body part. And I normally give meaningful names to the bodies in the master part. In that context it would be great if I could map those names into iProperties of the new parts. like Title or Description. That would save a lot of time and the necessity for double entries.

In a way it already works like that, but only for one specific property, and only at initial creation.

  • The body name carries over to the part file name automatically.
  • Part file names carry over automatically to the Part Number at initial creation.

So if you name the solid bodies by their Part Number, then don't change it when you derive the parts with Make Part or Make Components, you have indirectly set the Part Number property.

If you know about this, you can use it to your advantage.  However, if the part numbers change for some reason after you have derived the parts, you now have to potentially change the number in three places (solid body, part file name, Part Number iProperty).

It would be useful to have this association continue so that the iProperty is linked to the solid name, even though the file name would still have to be updated separately.  If that associative link were created, it would seem to make sense to extend the idea by also letting it map to other properties besides the Part Number, as requested here.  But even if that can't be done for some reason, letting the currently-possible carryover between solid name and Part Number behave as an associative link would still be beneficial.

True enough, @jtylerbc , I had almost forgotten that. But since I usually work in a Vault context with Data Standard on top this won’t work.

It would be nice to have a setting similar to the drawings where you can copy model props into the drawing. And update them on demand. I’m not sure about an associativity. I guess that could cause some nasty dirty flags.
