Great idea. Sometimes I suppress a constraint, change a few other things, and then I know I really need to edit the Suppressed constraint before I turn it back on or it will conflict with my changes. It would be nice to have a clean way to do this without risking undesired changes when I un-suppress a constraint, or having to delete it and create a new one.
However, a very similar idea which currently has more votes is this one: Add Measurement as Paramenter. It wouldn't solve the problem you've brought up because it more implies adding Parameter functionality to the Measure tool (which, from what I've heard, is poised for some very overdue improvements soon). This may be the better solution because the new Measure functionality may be more versatile than what we could achieve with Constraints.
But I think both ideas are good, and I'd be happy if Autodesk implemented either. A vote for either or both would be a good thing in my opinion.
@dan_szymanski, just wanted to see if I could poke some attention at this idea. I'm hoping it might be one of those "too easy/obvious not to" changes. This can be a game changer when making careful changes to delicate "house-of-cards" assemblies.
If it could also be changed so that deleting a constraint while "Defer Updates" is on doesn't update the assembly, that would be great. These two changes being made would make doing those careful changes to delicate assemblies much more feasible and less of a train wreck.
Is there an alert function (Like an auto alert by email when the status of an idea changes)? I would love to be able to stay in touch with the status of this idea and many others
Hi @Anonymous. You're automatically "subscribed" to an idea whenever you comment on it. Or, you can manually subscribe without commenting by clicking on "Idea Options" in the upper right hand corner and clicking "Subscribe".
To make sure you receive email updates for your subscriptions, go to Site Preferences (in the upper right), click on "Subscriptions & Notifications", go to "Notification Settings", and enable whichever email notifications you want.
Let me ask you a clarifying question, would you need/expect to be able to edit ALL values of a constraint?
Clearly we would have to turn off preview, and editing the offset is probably trivial but do you need to change:
Type
Geometry Selections
Solution (mate to flush, etc.)
Constraint set
to/from transitional
to/from motion
Obviously the reason I'm asking is some of these are harder to do without doing a solve. How hard will it be to change the geometry selections but see nothing happen because preview is off and it's suppressed? you can't be sure you got it right...
If your 99% workflow is to change the offset what about enabling just the quick edit box for suppressed constraints?
I wold expect to be able to fully edit the constraint, just like I can when Defer Updates is turned on. I tend to think I'm pretty clever and can keep track of what I've changed If I break something, that's my fault, but I want to be able to make all the changes I need to, just like I can with Defer Updates turned on.
One very important thing, though. I would want the following indicators to update even with Suppression turned on:
The constraint name (i.e. Mate:1 changes to Flush:1 if I change from Mate to Flush)
The referenced component names that are shown if the "Display component names after relationship names" App option is turned on.
The selection highlights (blue and green highlights) that show on the model when I hover over the constraint.
The offset value at the end of the constraint description in the Browser
If those other indications didn't update, then yes, it would be VERY difficult to track what changes I've made to suppressed constraints. But with those indicators being updated, it's fairly easy. And fortunately, all of those already DO happen even with Defer Updates turned on... all except one.
That's one odd thing about editing constraints while Defer Updates is on. Numbers 1-3 DO happen, but number 4 doesn't. So with Defer Updates on, I can easily check if I've changed my selections/solution types, but I can't check if I've changed my offsets as desired without actually editing the constraint.
So what I would want all boils down to this:
Make it so editing a Suppressed constraint is just like editing a constraint with Defer Updates turned on and I have all the same controls.
Make the improvement that editing a constraint with Defer Updates/Suppression turned on makes Number 4 above happen, in addition to Numbers 1-3.
But in the name of consistency, for the sake of those who do use joints, anything that works for one should work for the other. So yes, there is a similar requirement. But it'll be other people complaining one day if this isn't done for joints, not me
