iPart: Transfer 3D Sketches to Child Parts

Hello everyone,

We’re working extensively with iParts in Autodesk Inventor and are currently facing a challenge that I hope someone in the community—or perhaps even Autodesk—can help solve or offer a workaround for.

Background:

We use iParts to parameterize our components. So far, we’ve successfully managed to transfer 2D sketches into child parts using iMates. However, what we’re missing is the ability to transfer 3D sketches into child parts as well.

Why is this important?

Our designs include a 3D tunnel axis that serves as a central reference—both for visual representation in plans and for further processing in external structural analysis software. This axis is defined in a 3D sketch and must be present in every child part.

Question to the community:

  • Is there a way to inherit 3D sketches in iParts, similar to how 2D sketches or iMates can be transferred?
  • Has anyone found a workaround, e.g., using derived parts, adaptive components, or other techniques?
  • Could this be a potential feature request for future Inventor versions?

I’d appreciate any insights or shared experiences. If helpful, I can also provide a sample model for illustration.

Best regards,
Alexander Naljot
