Improving the "Finish" feature

Improving the "Finish" feature

Hello,

We recently upgraded to Inventor 2024 and tried to use the new "Finish" feature, but the result was not as expected. I have a few ideas that help make this feature a little better

1. It would nice to be able to create new process in a similar way as the material or appearance, directly through Inventor.

2. At the moment, for thickness and hardness you can only put a single value, but in reality we sometime need tolerance. For the thickness, we have acces a way to add a tolerance, but this data cannot be excrated afterward. As for the hardness, we don't even have this option. If I want to say something like: "Surface hardness between 55 and 60HRC" I have to manually add the upper or lower tolerance.

3. When you add the finish information on your IDW, it will not update automatically if you change Model State. you have to do everything again, which is time consuming and prone to error

4. Also, you cannot refer to your finish in your TitleBlock. It could be good to have this possibility

5. Lastly, for the surface texture, when added, it will change the color of the face(s) you selected. This causes you part to look like a rainbow all the time. I think it could be cool for the surface texture to be transparent and have the option (a button) to either show the surface texture or not (in both IPT and IDW). This way, your part looks the same as it would in real lifeand same goes when added to an assembly, and on your IDW, you can use teh proper color on all page, and have 1 page at the end when you check the surface texture box, and only on that part you will see the section the surface texture is applied on.

There is a way, but I'll give you that it's VERY cumbersome. When applying a finish, make sure to check the "export parameters" option. This will export the parameters to custom iProp's in your model. You can then use these in your drawings.

Like I said, far from ideal, but it is possible.

Hello,

thank you for sharing your feedback. We already have a user forum topic "SEEKING FEEDBACK: Finish Feature" you can look under the hood of future improvements and help us to identify more improvements.

1. yes, it's already identified as next future step.

2. It should be fixed in Inventor 2025

3. We didn't know about it. We'll take a look at what the problem is and try to fix it.

4. Good idea.

5. Inventor 2025 has a new option to enable/disable finish appearance. The setting is specific for one Finish during create/edit. If I understand correctly you prefer a switch to turn it ON/OFF across the scene / drawing.
