I would like the ability to import data from navisworks to inventor, perhaps through a file format that preserves the solids/surfaces in navis and can be imported to inventor. It is possible today to import into autocad, but its timeconsuming with the workaround via autocad.
Navisworks performs a conversion of object data in order to optimize for fast display. this results in reduced accuracy, especially with curved surfaces.
It's also a problem procedurally as model data in NWD format is still considered somewhat "secure" i.e. it can be shared for coordination purposes with less worry about being "ripped off" (read into that term what you want). Less secure than 3D PDF, but much better for federating models from a wide variety of sources e.g. Inventor, Revit, Civil3D, Plant3D, and Tekla.
What regards accuracy, I'll have to live with the accuracy I have when I see the model in Navisworks anyway.
I do not find the "secure" argument valid, since it is possible to export 3d model data in FBX format, which in turn can be read in autocad and saved to dwg and imported to Inventor.
I am just after a quick way to get the models to inventor (maybe as refence data as we do with 2d autocad?).
dgorsman, I understand your concern, but there is a problem getting certain types of data into Inventor. I work with some clients who need to bring plant equipment into their layouts, so they can design support equipment, safety fencing, etc. Unfortunately, the only data that is sometimes available is a Navisworks layout, with no real prospects of an actual model. You bring up some valid concerns, but it may be the only workflow available for some users...
A Navisworks file (NW) as a coordination model in Inventor would be very helpful.
NW files can be referenced in Revit and AutoCAD without any problems regarding accuracy, security etc. After all, it is not a planning model but a coordination model!
Our customers do mechanical engineering and plant planning, here the coordination model (building planning, media, steel construction,...) would be of great help
It is about time we get a way for inventor to read Navisworks models WITH the metadata Navis has. Not a dumb model and conversions between them. As an Autodesk product. This should be something you should be able to do on ALL Autodesk products. It makes it easier for any company to start from one product to another. And still be in the "Autodesk universe". Autodesk. STOP being ignorant on this issue. Getting this done is one step closer. When my company can make a good model conversion program from AutoCAD to Navis. Then Autodesk can make one with no problem either right from AutoCAD (you can but its actually limited when it comes to metadata, either properties or xdata) to Inventor or AutoCAD to navis or navis to autocad or navis to inventor or................
Yup, would be nice to be able to use Navisworks data inside Inventor. I could even live with something like the way ReCap point clouds can be imported in Inventor. That would be much less of a pain than going through 3 other apps to get something usable.

However, on my desk it is no less relevant these days, as many companies I collaborate with exports to .IFC files that I can view in Navisworks. But again struggling to reference in Inventor. (most of the time I just need to make sure my parts fit their model)
I have IV2025. I have been supplied nwd file for quoting workshop drawings. Its ok for quoting but should i ask for actual files if approved or put a clause assumption that based on proper model supplied.
I read conversation that its 3 step process to get into inventor. But my question is, will thhe structure be same while going through 3 step conversion i.e nwd to fbx to stl to inventor or will it come as solid part.
In past, i had exp with revit files where importing didnt work from rvt to iam using Any cad.
My vote is Yes for having direct conversion. Shud i ask for iges or stp file instead of nwd ? Why is Inventor so difficult to import from other cad platform ?
You end up creating native inventor part. I hvv to create workshop drawiings so need native files. Can you create idw if not native inventor files ?
