I want a slot hole command

I want a slot hole command

There are times when you want to constrain assembly at the center of the slot hole (long hole).

As a countermeasure, we use the sketch of the slot hole to create the center axis (working axis) and constrain it to the axis.

I would like to develop a command that can create a slot hole, like a hole command, so that you can easily recognize the center of the slot hole.

Here's my attempt:

This has been suggested so many times on several ideas, maybe it's about time it was implemented.

Loads of idea submissions having the same idea and I was about to post a duplicate too. Lets get this implemented please.

Have you tried joints?

I have used joints.

I also know that you can "rigid" at the joint with the slot hole sketch.

However, not necessarily inserting bolts from the sketch side.

Therefore, I submitted such a request.

ジョイント使ったことありますよ。
スロット穴のスケッチを使用して、中心にジョイントで「リジット」出来る事も知ってます。
しかし、必ずしもスケッチの面からボルトを挿入するとは限りません。
よって、このような要望を提出しました。

Unfortunately, Joints don't solve this problem. There's already another thread asking for a center-of-slot assembly relationship... https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/slot-joint-constraint/idi-p/5169277 but this needs some more attention, and is a slightly different request. A slot option for the hole command (with the assembly relationship in its center) would be a great idea too. In my experience over many years, it's really difficult to get CAD software companies to understand how important this is. Case in point: how long it took Autodesk to give us slotted sketch features, and the fact that the other thread originated in 2014.

Hi Everyone,

I've created a Screencast showing exactly how Joints solve this problem.

You might have to click on the link to watch it.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/community/screencast/a9a7eeab-d53a-47a7-a522-a315b15f5d4e

Joints analyse geometry, not features or sketches so they should work from either side of the slot.

This Screencast was made with Inventor 2018, please let me know if the behaviour is different in earlier version of Inventor.

Would this method solve your issue?

Ok, so if you hold down the control key after hovering over a point on a certain geometry plane, that plane's selection is 'captured', and stays selected, allowing you to pick other points on that plane, including the center of the slot. That doesn't just help with the problem, it goes a long way towards solving it. Feeling a little dumb here...is that little gem actually documented somewhere, because this is the first time I remember seeing it.

Awesome! I'm glad it worked for you 🙂

I saw a screencast. Thank you.

But is my operation bad?
The center of the slot can not be acquired.

It is possible if there is a slot in the center of the model.

Can you do it like the picture below?

スクリーンキャストを拝見しました。ありがとう。

しかし、私の操作が悪いのでしょうか。
スロットの中心は取得できません。

モデルの中心にスロットがあれば可能です。

下の絵のような場合は、できますか?

Great Catch Menix - you are exactly right.

It looks like there are some improvements to be made to the joint command 😕

The best I could come up with is to use the 'Offset from origin' option. Good for one hit, but no good if the size of the slot changes.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

It seems to work if the slot was created using the 'centerpoint slot' tool, but not for other types of slots. Ideally it would find the geometric center of the slot--or of any other shaped cut--no matter how it was created.

Hey Autodesk,

It would be awesome if you would be able to incorporate a slotted hole command in the hole feature for different sizes fasteners.

Totally Agree!
The new 2019 hole function is allready really nice, but I miss this in the function too.

It would make placing and editing slotted holes alot easier.

Hello,

The customer wants to add a slot form on hole command panel. it means slot depth must be equal counterbore depth while creating a screw hole.

Hi

Please refer to below idea which has been implemented in Inventor 2020, I think your problem will also be addressed when Joint command support to pick center point of Slot and Rectangle holes.

What are you guys at Autodesk waiting for....Making holes in an assembly can take as much as 25% of the job time. It's very worthwile to add productive features in holemaking !

For anyone who'd like to vote, here's a new related idea for creating center marks for slots in drawings: Center Mark for slots in drawings.

Slots, that load with holes, that are able to be found by the hole table in non flat pattern view.  Yes, Yes, Yes.

I would love to have the option to create slots in the "hole" command instead of having to do slots in the sketch for a part. This would also be great for making drawings because the hole and thread dimension command could call out slot width x length as well.
