Just thought I'd chime in here and add the keyword "weldment". Flexible weldments are needed! Some weldments can indeed contain captive, moveable parts. There are loads of forum posts on this issue, and no side-effect free workarounds.

I find the fact that this issue was archived disheartening.
We include pivots, hinges, U-joints, etc. in weldments but desire flexibility to be maintained in higher level assemblies. To obtain this flexibility, I have to include the portions on either side of the flexible component in a higher assembly as a REF and this higher ass'y can be made flexible. While this works, it is often tedious to create the pieces and visibilities must be set up so the ass'y looks right when moving. It would be much simpler if Weldments were allowed to take a Flexible status.
