Did you mean:

Enable selection of origin planes directly in the constraint dialog box.

Enable selection of origin planes directly in the constraint dialog box.

Now when constraining parts/assy's I have to browse to the part/assy in de browser and expand several times to be able to select the origin planes. I know I can make them visible in advance but that's not what I want due to a cluttered display with all Origin/Workplanes on.

I suggest to add a check box next to the "Select part First" option with something like "Select Origin Plane"

An option you can select in conjunction with pick part first to “show work features on selection” after you pick the part so all the planes, points and axes become visible. That would be amazing!

These would be amazing features, have you tried UCS-contraint sets?

For me, they basically bridge the gap between iMates and manual assembly.

@kacper.suchomski  Thanks for sharing! I'm going to test this one tomorrow! It looks like this is exactly what I'm looking for.

-UPDATE-

This plugin does the job exactly as I described in my intial post!! Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction! @kacper.suchomski

Though it would be nice if it is integrated into Inventor.

I would just like to be able to specify one of the 'active' assembly's origin work features.  I think maybe asking for that constraints dialog to include user interface controls that are specific to components within the assembly is most likely a step too far, due to nearly limitless possibilities.  When the dialog shows, there may not be any components, or there may be 100 instances of 100 different unique source model files, and which one should the user interface controls initially point to in that situation.  Pre-selection or post-selection of one or more components to enable their functionality would likely not be ideal, especially when not intending to create a constraint between origin work features, but between faces, edges, vertices, or custom work features.

Similar user interface controls can be seen when we attempt to create a new rectangular pattern of assembly components, where it has a drop-down list containing the 3 origin work axes to choose from.  And when using the Mirror feature in an assembly, we have 3 buttons for specifying the 3 origin work planes as the mirror plane.  In all cases, they are pointing to the 'active' document's origin work features, because that is a 'stable' source.

The user interface controls I would like added to the constraints dialog would be:

  • a drop-down list for the 3 origin axes of the active assembly
  • a drop-down list for the 3 origin planes of the active assembly
  • button or checkbox for specifying the origin point of the active assembly

Maybe that section gets activated or expanded while in 'select something to constrain' mode, while that dialog is open/active, such as after clicking on one of the selection buttons in the dialog, so it knows which object on which 'side' of the constraint to associate it with.
