Drawing Dimensions - Allow Forced Floor/Ceiling within Tolerance

Drawing Dimensions - Allow Forced Floor/Ceiling within Tolerance

Sometimes with dimensions I need to reduce precision to allow for larger variation (for example: overall dimensions for finished assemblies).

When I create these reduced-precision dimensions, I don't always want Inventor to just round to the nearest unit. Sometimes I want it to always round up (ceiling) or round down (floor) to account for largest or smallest possibilities.

I would like to see maybe some radio buttons or similar added into the Precision section so you can choose how Inventor deals with dimensions.

I found 2 similar ideas from the past as well, so figured I'd mention here as well:

Hi,

I often would use rounding drawing dimensions to 5 or 10 or something else sometimes. So I woul apriciate if this was possible like it is in Autocad for example.

In our large fabrications, we tend to work to tolerances of about +/- 3mm, so tend to avoid dimensions that include a decimal point. However, by necessity, some dimensions end up coming out with a .5 in there, especially if they are associative.

The solution is to change the precision of the dimension to '0', but where there is a .5 dimension, Inventor (as per accepted convention) always rounds up. However, if you have a series of .5 dimensions in line, all rounded up, then the overall dimension ends up being oversize.

It would be great if we had the option to round up or down selectively on each dimension to avoid this. The only current solution is to override the dimension text manually, but this does not allow the dimension to update if the part/assembly is modified.

Hi,

I would like to have the following implemented in the drawing environment.

As the header already suggests, I would like to be able to either round a drawing dimension up and also down to the nearest value.

Example:

Dimension value = 123.44

I would like to be able to show the dimension as 123 when round down is chosen, or

I would like to be able to show the dimension as 124 when round up is chosen.

This could be dependent on the precision, like if the precision is set to 1.1

The round down is 123.4

The round up = 123.5

Regards,

For metric, we often get the request to round to the nearest .5 mm as well.

Being employed at a Channel partner as a support specialist, I have been asked this question from time to time. It would be great to add some sort of a switch in the particular dimension style to do this.

Currently if we want to round down/up (not just round off to the nearest number) Dimension Values, we have to click "hide dimension value" and write it by hand.

This solution makes a lot of problems, because when something is changed on model, then in the drawing we still can notice the number written by hand.

Make the option "round down/up", not only "tolerance", please

If you go to the Manage tab in your drawing, then click on "Styles Editor", click on the + before "Dimension" and your dimension style (like Default ISO). In the window you can change the Linear precision. This is set for the current drawing, but you can save it as a template. Image example: https://ibb.co/p4xdVrT

Hi L.Greft, Thank You for your attention. I know the option "precision". But in my work I often need smaller number than in model. For example i need: On model I have: 42,7 mm In the drawing I get 43 mm I need 42 mm. So I need the option "round down". When i change the "precision", it can't help me.

Sorry I misunderstood your problem, unfortunately I don't know a solution for that.

Maybe there is a setting somewhere like in Revit for the whole project -> top menu: settings -> units of the project -> in the rounding window set the user, rounding increment, e.g. -5

swidawski, Unfortunately we talk about Inventor NOT Revit. I can't find it in INVENTOR.

Hi I wrote to check if there is the same or similar setting as in revit. After all, I'm not an idiot to write about revit as I know it's about inventor. Programs have a similar engine so hence my observation... B. Regards SW

That's an interesting one, yeah I don't believe there's a way to round the dimension annotation to the nearest integer. There is a rounding function (called "round()") that can be used in the parameters section of the to round off inputs to the nearest integer. You may be able to get away with using some sort of dummy variable to have both the precise measure on the model and the rounded number for the annotation: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2015... But that said, yeah I agree: a direct way to round off dimension annotations would be nice.

Rounding up / down sounds good.

If i change the size of the object, the value of the dimension would still re-adjust automatically and won't be stuck with the overwritten number.

By the way...the ability to round up & down would also be useful with dimensions in AutoCAD!
