In many applications the save icon is greyed out while there are no edits to the file. After any edits the file is 'dirty' and the Save icon becomes available.
I work with many files simultaneously and manage them with SVN (not vault). I would like to know if there are edits to a file awaiting save before I close the file.
It would be nice if the dirty file indicator could indicate the type of edit so that I can chose to ignore the prompt to save. e.g. If a opened a car assembly and opened a door so that I could make a rendered image I may chose to not save the file just because the door was opened.
Perhaps the dirty file indicator could show the clean/dirty status of
- Model - Whether the assembly or one of its parts physically changed (part made longer)
- Position - If a part was moved within an assembly (car door opened)
- Materials - If the material of the assembly or any of its parts changed (the car was changed from black to red)
- Appearance - Anything visual that does not affect the model: View rep was added or changed in any way. The Appearance (environment) was changed in any way. Parts were made visible/invisible or suppressed/unsuppressed or a section was made.
If I exit a file and am asked to save any changes but cannot remember what has changed I want to be able to identify the change (a flag for each of the above categories) so that I do not unnecessarily create a new revision of the part/assembly.
