Dimension Background Mask

Dimension Background Mask

There are similar posts to this one, but they have several issues (text, hatch, dimensions, etc.) and they are not getting much support I think because of this.

So to be clear: Inventor needs a way to make the background of Dimension Text able to mask what is behind the dimension. This should be a toggle on/off option within the dimension edit box.

Designers and drafters are using shaded views more often these days, so what used to be simple lines are now a shaded part limiting available white space. W

hen a dimension crosses these shaded areas there needs to be an option to hide what is behind the dimension. I am not looking for a work around; I am familiar with using the symbol clipping, hatch clipping, dimension text color change, etc. I should not have to create a sketch every time I need to hide a dimension background or make individual dimensions unique colors to be able to read them.

Please also support: "Background Mask" and "Drawing Dimensions".

Thank you, Kenny

Dimension text needs text fill so when used on a shaded backgrount the dimension stands out better

Generally, best practice is to avoid having dimensions within the boundary of your geometry. However, I agree this would be useful in some situations. Pending the implementation of text fill, you could follow these steps:

  1. Create the dimension that you want to have a text fill
  2. Click on the drawing view that the dimension belongs to
  3. Click "Start Sketch"
  4. Draw a rectangle around your dimension
  5. In the Ribbon, click "Fill/Hatch Region", then click your rectangle
  6. Click the paint bucket on the left for a color fill, and choose the color you want
  7. Resize the rectangle if necessary to enclose your dimension's text
  8. Click "Finish Sketch"
  9. You can drag the text background around if you move your dimension, but if the length of the text changes, you'll have to edit your sketch and re-size the rectangle

Definitely not ideal. But will do in a pinch if you really need a background for your dimension text.

Thanks for the temporary solution. I agree it's not the best practice but sometimes with large drawings there is no choice. Kind Regards Julian Shepherd

any one ask for the ability to put a background mask on text and dimension that are over objects.

This actually has been requested before, but hasn't received much support. Feel free to cast your vote for the original to help get this suggestion recognized: Drawing Dimensions.

this is for me basic stuff and should be one of the first thing in a cad, many time you do not have the space other to put text or dim over objets line. I guess no one a Autodesk are making drawings for a living.

I totally support a background mask for dimensions in the drawing.

I support this idea even when I hate place text over lines. Is just necessary some times depending of the customer preferences. In my case, I work in a company where is necessary. In fact, we need export to AutoCAD all our drawings to masking text and labels every time. Maybe some kind of Add-Ins is enough to avoid change the software code.

This same text masking idea should be applied to balloons, free text, leader text, basically anywhere text is used. A simple right click option to "mask" or "unmask" would suffice. If we get fancy, we could even change the mask color or transparency to customize it for whatever you are trying to mask over.

Just like mmiller already said, it should be available in dimensions, balloons, texts, welding symbols, annotations, etc.

This NEEDS to happen.

Yes please.  Especially with dual measurements, the text is using up a lot of room and it's hard to arrange dims without crossing lines.

Yes, I agree that this is a needed tool.

Yes off course, masking background dimension is very needed tool. Inventor developers can have look with tools and features available in solid edge. They have same feature "Fill with background color"

Yes indeed. This will be a long-awaited update. Drawings are difficult to read with lines that interfere with the measurement.

I vote for this idea,it will make live a lot easier. Strange thing is that in Inventor 2019 there is an option to create a background fill for text/leader. But when you go to Text format through the dimension edit window, this option is not available?
