Custom unit string in Drawing dimension styles

Custom unit string in Drawing dimension styles

Custom Unit String Edited.jpg

Initially I was going to request the option to use the " symbol as the unit string for "inches" in drawing Dimension Styles... but then I thought, why not just let users define a fully custom unit string for any unit type? That way we can arbitrarily use "in", "inches", the " symbol, or whatever the heck we want for inch units, and we can use "mm", "millimeters", or whatever we want for millimeter units, and likewise for the other unit types.

Side note:

Yes, I realize I can set " as a dimension suffix. But that leads to the " symbol being at the END of whatever type of annotation the dimension is, including hole and chamfer callouts. For example, if the suffix is set to the " symbol, then a chamfer callout would read something like:

0.25 x 45°"

And a hole callout would read something like:

Ø0.5 THRU"

This is obviously not desirable. If we could define the units string ourselves, we could use the " symbol or whatever we want as the unit string, and know that it will display properly in every kind of dimension annotation.

I'm also aware that I can choose "ft" as my units and Inventor will display in X' XX" format. But this is only an option if you really want to display in feet and inches. At many companies it is the standard to call out dimensions only in inches, even if the measurement is more than a foot.

I got on the idea station to submit exactly this suggestion. PLEASE this is such an easy fix, yet it continues to be a constant thorn for our users.

Just chiming in to give a couple more examples and say this has been a thorn in my side for years, I can't believe such a basic problem hasn't been addressed yet.

That's a great option to add!

Just chiming in to say that this is sorely need. The " in the suffix field is nothing more than a hack job workaround to fake the string, and it looks terrible on anything beyond a drawing with basic linear or radial dimensions. " is a unit string plain and simple, and should be usable as one. The below snip shows the currently only way to use " as a unit string with unit set to ft instead of in and fractional dimensions, with suppress leading zeroes checked. However this being fractional and also only working on dimensions under 12in means it doesn't work for tolerances or bigger parts. Which obviously negates the usability as a workaround. However, this shows that the formatting for " as a unit string ALREADY EXISTS IN THE PROGRAM. So please, if the full feature requested here can't be implemented.. Please Autodesk at least put full functionality for " in as a unit string, since it's halfway there already. Inch symbol.PNG

I love using Inventor but this is such an obvious problem with several possible acceptable solutions (some probably even pretty easy to implement ones). I understand that the majority of the world uses metric, but for those of us who don't or can't this is a real thorn in our sides.
