Custom Colour Schemes - Inventor Application Options

Custom Colour Schemes - Inventor Application Options

There is an inherit issue with the design of Inventor colour schemes; in that what one user likes, another will find distracting or distasteful. But thankfully, such colour scheme issues can finally be laid to rest. Introduce the very much Doge Theme colour scheme for Inventor;

Or alternatively, rather than going with the latest in Autodesk Colour Scheme crazes; Inventor users could be given the freedom to finally decide on what colours their Inventor sessions consist of, using their own intuition to solve the age old problem of ugly colour schemes. Think about it, “custom colour schemes”… Doge Theme would be left in the dark!

Kthxbye.

Hi.

Could you please have a look at delimiting user options in choosing colours set in colour tab for (prehighlights)?

The combinations given by application options/colours tab are very limited and might not suit all the users.

For example, I am using the "Presentation" Colour scheme (as I find gradient blue colour most relaxing from other options given, due to long work hours). At the same time, the highlight colours available in this scheme requires more eye effort to distinguish and read dimensions within sketches that are selected in a tree and, therefore, prehiglighted. Regarding the red colour, I personally find red "hurting" my eyes and I'd like to adjust both of these colours to my personal preference. Also, circumstances during design change and I have feeling many users will appreciate this flexibility.

Secondly, why could not we pick the gradient colour as well? Someone might like other colour than what is given.

Third, could you please have a look in sorting the placement of pop-up command menus? As shown below, I just wanted to check the sketch and/or check the values of sketch dimensions, and of all the screen area that  is available, pop-up command came up on top of my dimensions, so I cannot read them. In this and in many other cases. On top of that, I have selected the sketch in the tree, but this gives me pop-up command in the middle of the screen? What is the purpose of this popping out at all and so far from the cursor? Could you please make software distinguish where I have clicked to a sketch (tree or graphichs screen) and give the user expected and logical response?

Inventor includes (but not installed) a tool called the "color scheme editor" that allows you to change/create different color schemes.

You can install it from c:/users/public/public documents/Autodesk/InventorXXXX/sdk   (xxxx is the version of Inventor you are on) and double click on usertools.msi and install all the tools there.. Then in the User Tools folder that is created after the installation process there will be a "colorschemeditor/bin" folder you can launch the program by clicking on the exe file in there..

Once you start the program make sure you do a backup from the backup menu there so you can always revert back.

Thank you,

I did not know about this tool and following your instructions (including backup of registry file) it really helped me pushing things ahead in regards adjusting the colours, as I can now "mellow" changes when pre-highlight entities or adjust the gradient of graphics screen. Although it is a great thing to have this tool as is right now (running 2015 version at the moment), I still think it would be more comfortable option to have it accessible from Colours tab (if possible to achieve), but I presume this is just a drop in a sea of development directions.

Hey Mark,

I also think this would be a super helpful tool for people with color blindness. I have been in more than one class where the discussion has come up. Inventor really needs a simpler method other than manually going into the SDK package and trying to manually edit the colors (already tried it, almost broke the computer..)

Here's a link to another Color Scheme post. Although it is made in good fun, it still gets the point across that a customizable and simpler one is needed. Up-vote this too so we can get some changes made!

Offer goes to anyone else commenting on this thread too!

Great post, hopefully we can get this rolling for a new version!

This idea has been implemented within Autodesk Inventor 2019. Special thanks to everyone who cast a vote for it.  A new "Customize Schemes" button on the Application Options > Colors tab, allows the configuration of many user interface elements to meet individual preferences.  Even a "Cat" or "Doge" scheme, if your heart so desires.

So now that this is implemented Autodesk has added a new feature to highlight part geometry in drawings when and item on the Parts List is selected.   However, I find that the dark green color used for the highlighted geometry (in all color schemes) is difficult to find amongst the many black lines.    It would be a great improvement to be able to edit these colors too.  They are not available in the color scheme editor.  However, they do seem to be listed in the xml file if you export options.
