I'm not sure if I got it but from what I can see, solid edge actually creates a custom pattern with an occurrence for each selected reference object, so the patterned parts are still linked to the original parts.
And solidworks makes independent copies (not a pattern) of the part and the mates, and you have to re-select the 2nd half of all the constraints to redefine them in the new locations.
It's not quite the same but to do a similar thing, I put the parts in a sub-assembly (with BOM structure = phantom) and just copy and re-constrain that. If warranted, I might set up imate(s) so I can alt-click and drag to apply consistent constraints a bit quicker.
Component files can contain standalone constraint halves - iMates.
When manually copied in the graphics window in assembly file, components maintain their constraints to each other within the group being copied. However, they cannot contain external ties because this would fix them in their original place.
