Base Quantity as Flat Area for Sheet Metal

Base Quantity as Flat Area for Sheet Metal

In our business, we need to be able to export the total sheet metal quantities to production (in sqin). This would be much easier if the flat pattern area could be exported as the Base Quantity. This would also require units of area added to the Base Unit field.

Hi.

To do this today, create a new parameter to hold your sheet metal extents, and use iLlogic to write a value to it.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2016...

You can then use this value as the base quantity.

Note that base quantity doesn't allow units n^2, but you can allocate the parameter then switch the units afterward.

If you set this up in your template - you won't have to do it again, but make sure you set up some error checking, or the rule will fail if there is no flat pattern generated!

Why are AREA units not valid in inventor? Especially when lengths and volumes are valid...

I've been researching this for a long time now because plate steel is typically purchased by AREA quantities. There are many forum threads about this shortcoming but I cannot find any information from Autodesk about why or if they intend to fix it.

Area units ARE supported, I'm sorry of my reply was confusing. You may not see the unit you want in the unit selection box, but you can type it in and it will work.

For example:

10mm^2

10cm^2

10m^2

Does that help?

No go paul. Base Unit stays as length and Unit Quantity goes screwy.

BOM then displays Unit Quantity x number of parts and a length unit.

Try setting AREA to 'in', then open:

Tools > Document settings > BOM

and set Base quantity to AREA.

now - click on the 'X with an arrow' button next to Base quantity which will open the parameters manager and set AREA to 'in^2'

When you  close the parameters manager the units should have set themselves...

Ok this is closer than we've gotten before but still not quite. Your work around DID change base unit to in^2!!! Which is AWESOME! but our BOMs are set up to use unit formatting so we can export directly into our parts management system. I have to round to an integer and remove the unit string. When we toggle "Unit String" off, the BOM reads "Incompatible Units Error." When we try to change unit type, Areas are still unavailable... hence incompatible units

Could you try checking your 'AREA' parameter for export, and then referencing it into your parts list directly?

You can then use custom unit formatting to massage the number?

In the parameter manager, check the box in the 'Export Parameter' Column, in the same row as the parameter you want to export.

Now right click on the parameter equation cell and choose 'Custom Property Format' to set the precision and remove the unit string.

It doesn't seem to matter how you get it into the BOM, Unit Type is still unavailable to do formatting. I think they have more issues with this unit formatting than with the missing base quantity. Lately, with 2018, the unit formatting tool fails all together when you limit qty to view representations. Here is the other forum where I'm trying to figure that mess out.

I have created a Screencast showing how this can be set up - I hope that you find it useful?

I could not solve the formatting issue that you found when filtering the Autodesk Inventor parts list to suit an Assembly View representation that we discussed on this post:

Just ran into this issue with one of our own customers.  We shouldn't have to fudge the units just so we can set a "base unit", and then change it back.  I see no reason why we can't have a parameter that calculates a true area and then use it as our base units and/or base quantity.  It works for other custom parameters.  Why not area units?  And why is there an "Area" unit type in the Parameters window when there's nothing useful under it?  (Who uses "circular mils"???  Why don't we have legitimate area options under that heading???)  This limitation seems arbitrary and frustrating.
