Application Options for Constraint Inference Scope

Inventor users need an Application Options setting to globally toggle the Constraint Inference Scope. Currently the options for Constraint Inference Scope have to be set for every single sketch created (see below):

What I am looking for is a way to make sure this never happens again:

Maybe it's just me but I cannot ever see a reason that I would want it to do this. I apply my geometric constraints the way I was trained and that is according to the logical option that conveys my design intent (if I want lines to be collinear, I will make them collinear, or use visible skeleton geometry, not apply a coincident constraint between an intersection and some other line clear on the other side of the sketch).

 

This problem is exacerbated when skeleton geometry sketches get busy and more complex and having to switch this off for every single sketch is annoying.

This can help :

 

If you press CTRL while sketching the only constraint that is being applied is continuity, meaning sketch entities are connected. You can press CTRL in any stage of sketching if you notice that Inventor is screwing up relations. You are then free to apply intelligent relations.

 

Personally I'm an adept of "dirty sketching", meaning intentionally drawing crooked. (my finger is on CTRL by default Smiley Happy). Intelligent constraints are applied after the drawing phase. Every constraint getting applied changes the shape of the sketch, so you have a visual feedback for what you are doing.

Thank you Alex. I am aware of that option and use it (and your "dirty" sketching techniques) regularly when feasible. We create a lot of complex skeletal modeling sketches and sketches for grating and floor plate that get super busy. It is not possible to use "dirty" sketching techniques in some of those sketches because we end up with the same situation on all the "dirty" profiles we purposely skewed/altered.

 

This is yet another "simple" change to the software that was made between 2013 and 2015 that made our work-lives miserable and myself and others would like to see an application option to turn this off.

 

Using the control-click method means we just have to go back and add all the perpendicular, parallel, vertical, and horizontal constraints to everything that we wanted there originally.

Here's an example:

The raised pattern floor plate on the levels of this galloway are created by a sketch that first creates the outer perimeter/extents of where the floor plate is needed. Then each cut around all the hinges, handles, moving parts, ladder connections, etc. is sketched in (without knowing the exact dimensions at first). Then the openings through the plate are "tied down". Then the joints between all the different pieces are sketched in to take advantage of the openings already there, the motion of the pieces, and the available stock plate sizes available for that thickness of plate.

 

That super busy "skeletal layout" sketch then gets derived into all the individual plate pieces.

 

As you can imagine, the sketch gets busy before any dimensions are even placed.

I'm absolutely on board with this.  It feels like it should be one of those "sticky" settings - change it, and it stays changed.  Time to head over to the beta forum...
