API access to auto sort on update in parts list

API access to auto sort on update in parts list

I would like to be able to turn on the Parts List auto sort on update option from the API. This would be useful for either defaulting the option to on with ilogic (since there is not currently a way to default this option on) or simply turning the option on when running a script that edits the BOM or Parts List. That way if manual edits are made afterwards the Parts list will update without further action.

I will also throw in someones request for being able to set this option in a template or style. I feel both of these ideas are similar and both provide a better level of control.

@MjDeck  Thanks for your response.

The ilogic sort2 method seems to sort it, but with some hiccups.

If there is an existing sort parameter that was manually set (by clicking on any of the column), the ilogic wont sort that. So after running the ilogic, I open the bom and 'cntr+ click' the column that is sorted, so that ilogic sort pattern can kick in.

Also, In Inventor 2019, the multiple column sort function manually using the 'shift' key doesn't stay after closing the BOM. We again have to re-sort it if we reopen again.

@akaluri those are off-topic from this Idea, but they are good points. Could you create dedicated ideas for both of them?

It's Crazy to me that we can't set the 'Auto Sort on Update' option in a template file. That's the whole point of templates.

Is there an Idea post for that aspect only? It really needs to happen.

@dusan.naus.trz @DRoam do not know what it is about but maybe you can make iLogic to do sorting whatever way you like and then make new column put numbers 1 to max specified and sorted the way you wanted, and sort by that column

hope i explained it well

have a lovely day

@pball

o also that “Auto Sort On Update” or check box info might be accessible by attributes, have a look:

@dan.szymanski

Thanks! How can we implement it?

Hello @chrisw01a , this idea is not yet implemented within the product. The status change to "Accepted" simply means that it is in our plans for an eventual delivery. Once an idea is set to "Implemented", we will reference what product version or update it is realized within.

This idea has been implemented within Autodesk Inventor 2025. Please review the Inventor 2025 What's New article here. For more information regarding how you may leverage the feature, and please review this page. As to API, it is also supported in this enhancement.

Special thanks to everyone who cast a vote for it.
