Align/Rotate surface appearance image

Align/Rotate surface appearance image

Currently there is no way to change the orientation of an applied image without creating a duplicate appearance with custom defined rotation in each one. There are many surface appearance images that are orientation dependent (such as wood flooring, brick, metal mesh, brushed surfaces, etc.). It sure would improve rendering and surfaces if you could control the alignment and rotation of an image applied to a surface.

I finally figured out that there is a way to accomplish this using the "adjust" command.

I know it's been a while since this was posted, but I wanted to add a little more detail for people who, like me, may not have seen how this actually works right away.

In order to modify an appearances, you need to start the "adjust" command, then select the face with the appearance you want to adjust (eyedropper pointer changes to paint can).

If you just want to manipulate the existing appearance layout only, IGNORE the floating menu with the colour palette. Instead, look for some mouse grips that appear approximately centered on the face after you've selected it (see pic below - these can sometimes be hard to see, and won't always be in the orientation pictured). They should allow you to rotate and scale the pattern so it better aligns with adjacent ones.

I think some appearances may let you adjust location with the perpendicular arrows too, but my attempts with a patterned one (expanded metal mesh) didn't seem to do anything, so you may not always be able to adjust appearances to match perfectly.

Still way better than having to deal with misaligned appearances!

Thank you!!
