Add option to Open Windows Folder from Browser Right-Click

I would like to see an option to open the containing Windows folder when you right click any part/assembly/drawing in the browser.

I agree that this would be handy to also work on files, but just so you know it does work on folders.

Just right click on a folder and then you will see the option to open in a new window.

the Idea is, that you have the option to right click on the part in the browser, then click on "open patch" the the folder where the file is saved pops open.

this is the same way as making a new idw from whitin the part, via the browser.Open Path.png

Great idea, @Torben.pedersen, I would use this all the time. Actually, looks like this has been requested before, too. Please consider voting for the original as well to help get this suggestion recognized. Thanks!

Thanks so much for posting this, @jaybowser38. Such a simple change but a huge time-saver that I would use all the time.

I voted for this idea, so I'm not offering this iLogic as a solution, but just a "workaround":

I do thins with an external iLogic rule:

Imports System.IO
'open folder
Try
Process.Start(ThisDoc.Path)
Catch
MessageBox.Show("Could not open folder.", "iLogic",MessageBoxButtons.OK,MessageBoxIcon.Information)
End Try

Thanks for the code, @Curtis_W. Couple quick questions:

  1. Could you modify the code to run for the selected component in the browser rather than the active doc?
  2. Could you modify the code to copy the folder path to the clipboard rather than opening it in Windows Explorer?

Hi DRoam,

Here is an iLogic rule that opens the selected component's folder, and copies that folder path to the clipboard, from which it can then be pasted.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,

Dim oEnt = ThisApplication.CommandManager.Pick(
  SelectionFilterEnum.kAssemblyOccurrenceFilter,
  "Select a component:")

If (Not oEnt Is Nothing) And _
(TypeOf oEnt Is ComponentOccurrence) Then
  Dim oDoc = oEnt.Definition.Document

  oPath = System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(oDoc.FullFileName)
  Clipboard.SetText(oPath)

  'open folder
	Try
		Process.Start(ThisDoc.Path)
	Catch
		MessageBox.Show("Could not open folder.", _
		"iLogic",MessageBoxButtons.OK,MessageBoxIcon.Information)
	End Try
End If

Awesome, thanks a lot for doing that! I wasn't familiar with how to work with the selected component or send something to the clipboard.

That's very helpful, I'll use that all the time. Thanks again!

If the idea is a duplication, I don't care. Would be a serious time-cutter, and must be in!!!

See snips below:

Don't make it this complicated, simply include "Open File Location" to Inventor as well, same as into ACAD!

Sounds legit, as both are from Autodesk!

Agree. Also make file highlighted once, got it opened from right click menu.

Hi,
if I'm looking at it correctly it's Implemented in version 2021.2. You will find this functionality in update 2. This functionality could not have come into being without everyone's votes. Please also vote on other ideas.

Thank you to the JDI team. File management is now more organized.
