Adaptive relationships should not constrain motion, they should adapt freely

“Adaptivity” actually restrains components from moving relative to each other, which is the complete opposite of what “Adaptive” means.

We currently have to constrain Adaptive parts to make them adapt. Inventor should allow us to drag Adaptive components and then update them afterward. This would enable what’s shown in the first video. Please vote if you agree this is how Adaptivity should work!

A few comments:

 

- The first video was actually done using Copy Object adaptivity, because Copy Object adaptivity works how the other two Adaptivity methods should work, by relaxing while you drag and then updating afterwards.

 

- In order for constraint-driven Adaptivity to be able to relax, we would need to be able to tell Inventor which constraints are Adaptivity-driving constraints (as suggested here: Option to designate constraints as ‘Adaptivity-driving’ rather than ‘Assembling'). This would also make solving Adaptivity much faster and more robust.

 

- If Autodesk (or anyone else) has doubts about the logical practicality of having Adaptivity work this way, please see this discussion: General Discussion forum: Proper way to use adaptivity.
