Ability to Import IFC (.ifc) Files Into Inventor

Ability to Import IFC (.ifc) Files Into Inventor

We've got a lot of 'crossover' Inventor users that need to refer to Revit, Bentley, ArchiCAD files etc on a regular basis for their designs. Yes they can request another generic CAD format like STEP/IGES etc etc, but the ability to receive IFC formats would be a very welcome addition to Autodesk's BIM offering, and would silence the Solidworks squad on another topic (as SWX has been able to do this for - ahem - a while...)

Many thanks,

Luke

The ability to export IFC is also necessary.

and need to import .rfa files as well.

This would be great for Factory Design.

How long will we have to wait?
When IFC can be exported, it is illogical that it cannot be imported. Smiley Frustrated

Hello, how can i import IFC in Inventor?

Or can anybody point out to me how step files can be made from bim.

@hlammerts you can't import an IFC file into Inventor directly. You will need to use some intermediate software like one of the programs mentioned above to convert it into a usable format.

Hi @hlammerts

maybe use Revit or

Solidworks.-))) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abm_2iE1eaU

Inventor will probably be in version 2025.-))) Maybe A small number of people to develop. (evolution for Inventor).-(

@hlammerts used Bricscad  to import the IFC and then export to step for a decent import in Inventor. Worked great but our employer would like to use just one software supplier, so the Bricscad option isnt a long term solution. We hope to get a proper direct import for ifc in the future. Will be continued (i hope)

Boys and Girls, the ‘official workaround’ or ‘way to to smart bim*’ would be the following: ..
1. Install Autodesk AutoCAD Architecture, import IFC, save as DWG
2. Install Autodesk AutoCAD Mechanical, open DWG, export to step
Inventor => import the step.

It still needs quality testing data because it probably is not very stable. And it requires a lot of preparation, eats tremendous amount of unnessacry HD space. Software Bloat

* besides the ‘smart bim route’ off course there is still is the ‘dumb & heavy route’.
Shortest path : bring in geometry as SAT into Inventor (unique element).

Keep you posted 😊
